Hi Pete, I have a Margaret SHAW who was christened 25th June 1786 (parents James SHAW and Elizabeth BUCHANAN). This could be her, as 23 seems a reasonable age to get married. The only way to be sure, though, would be via her death certificate as this would give her parents. Do you know when she died? My WATSONs I habe only traced as far forward as their births around 1780s, apart from my own direct ancestor, who was female and became a CUNNINGHAM when she married. Do you know the name of the parents of your Mathew? I have looked him up in the 1881 census. Do you have this entry? Let me know - if you haven't I will send you the details from it.
