    3. Hello Mike Researching early Scottish records is not easy from a distance. OPR films (Old Parochial Registers) are the main source but they vary greatly in how far back they go and how complete and readable they are. I am not sure how far back Roseneath goes - certainly as far back as mid 1700s. The films are ordered through your nearest LDS Family History Library - not sure what the hire cost per film would be in USA - costs about NZ$4.50 here. Registers in some places such as Falkirk, some of the Glasgow parishes and also Inverness go back well into the 1600s (with some gaps). Many of the Highland parishes have their earliest registers dating only from the 1780s. Another source may be Monumental Inscriptions but few would fo back as far as 1707 apart from some in major cities especially inscriptions inside major churches and cathedrals - many of the Dunbartonshire MIs have been transcribed and published in hard copy but again I am not sure how much of Roseneath's inscriptions were transcribed or how far back they go. The other source may be wills and sasines but this would depend on whether your ancestor was wealthy enough or owned land. I haven't so far gone into this source myself although I have received a couple of wills from connection to my CUTHILL and RUSSELL families in Stirlingshire - they can be very useful if there is one available. The OPR index is available on CD at your nearest LDS centre and is also available through Scots Origins on the Internet (but you need to have your credit card handy if you use this source). I haven't got back much past 1780s in Dunbartonshire with my CHALMERS, McCALLUM, McFARLANE families myself and am currently mainly filling out the family lines and sorting out cousins during the 1800s. Best of luck with your research.
