HI My 5 x g grandfather, George McWattie, was described as being" in Currakennaiken" in his daughter's marriage entry in 1762 at Luss. Is this the name of a house or a property or a village ? I'd be grateful for any assistance. Cathy
Hi Cathy I don't know where Currakennaiken is but it appears to be the name of a farm. Curraken is a variation of the name Corrigan and aik is an old Scots word for oak. These old farm and field names often did not make into the Ordinance maps. Cathy, Likely misspelled or transcribed and it would be a farm. There are several that could fit. Look here http://www.nls.uk/maps/joins/595.html select the top map click on it with your mouse then keep clicking towards the top of the map which is Luss. Cathy there is nothing in "The Making of Scotland" a comprehensive guide to the growth of Scotland's cities, towns and villages by Robin Smith. That's OK Cathy, my father lived at Luss as a young boy and walked on Loch Lomond when it froze over, I'd love to find out when that was as I don't think that would have happened all that often. My grandfather was a chauffeur and then became a bus driver so he travelled around this area quite often. My father was actually born at "Greenhill" Shandon, Rhu but they also lived at Gairloch Head and then seemed to stay in Johnstone, Renfrewshire for quite a while until my father married in 1942 and his father died there in the 1950's, Johnstone that is. Cathy, if you would like some photo's of Luss just let me know as we took a couple back in 2005 on our last trip back. Sandy (Tassie)
