I like that you have a John in your list. And that Jeanie Brown and her husband William McGregor were the same generation and same place as Hugh McGregor. Very hopeful! Here is what I have so far: (Anne21MAY2009) Birth record for John & Malcolm McGregor, possible sibs of Hugh McGregor plus their parents John & Sarah. Bonhill Parish, Dunbarton, Scotland 1826 & 1828, both written on the same entry. Official extract was shipped via Royal Mail and I got it. Not transcribed--just a Xerox exactly like the one I copied off the official web site. I got these and all other pre-1855 records (for a small fee) from The Old Parish Register deaths and burials and marriages section of Scotland's searchable government web site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Not sure if I am allowed to scan to email and send it around to you, so here is my typed translation at the end of this email. I ran out of facts and now am reduced to speculation!!! I cannot find any documentation of my ancestor Hugh McGregor's birth or death or who his parents were. I have his marriage record--got an official extract of that too, but because it was before they started keeping good records in 1855, it did not list parents or place of birth. Do any of you have this information? I have his 1851 Glasgow census record with wife Agnes and his children and step children. I found a Hugh McGregor in the 1841 census, but I have no way to tell if that is my Hugh. By the 1861 census he had died (sometime between 1853 & 57) and his widow Agnes was living with her third husband and Hugh's children as well as her others. Fact: Hugh McGregor said in the 1851 census that he was born in Helensburgh. I have the date from my dad's notes as 7OCT1827 but no documentation. Helensburgh is in Rhu aka Row Parish. It is in Argyll & Butte County now but used to be in Dunbarton County. I searched the parish records for his birth record in Rhu Parish but found nothing. So I searched the whole county and found some McGregor couples living nearby in Bonhill Parish having children on a regular basis. This couple had 2 sons---a year before Hugh was born and a year after he was born, so I think it is possible Hugh could have been their middle, unrecorded child. Second down from the top--both sons on one entry. If this is they, the parents were John & Sarah Translation: John, lawful son of John McGregor & Sarah ???MacNicol? Carmichal???(I can't read it--what do you think?), in the Village of Bonhill, was born the 4th May, 1826. Malcolm, the lawful son of ditto, was born the 11th Nov. 1828 - - - - Supporting facts: 1. Agnes Cross (Hugh's wife), widowed 3 times, died in Stirling, Stirlingshire right next door to Dunbartonshire. (See this map:) http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-stirling.htm 2. Isabelle McAllister is the mother in the birth listed right under McGregor. Agnes Cross's first husband was David McAllister. Could be friends and neighbors. At the time she married Hugh, she had 3 McAllister children. 3. Hugh McGregor named his first (and only) son John, so according to The Scottish Naming System (was used all over the British Isles and brought from there to America: The 1st son named after the father's father. The 2nd son named after the mother's father. The 3rd son named after the father or uncle. The 1st daughter named after the mother's mother. The 2nd daughter named after the father's mother. The 3rd daughter named after the mother or an aunt. Subsequent children named after other relatives.)his father was probably named John. What do you all think?
