I would suggest contacting the church in order to find out if they still have any records from their own cemetary (their website and contact details are at http://www.cumbernauldold.org.uk/) or if they've passed them on to the council or central archives. For other local cemetaries, I would suggest contacting the local council (www.northlan.gov.uk). I was at the council archives (in Cumbernauld) a few months ago and the archivist there told me that they would be getting the burial records fairly soon; I don't know if that's happened yet. The website for the archives is at http://www.northlan.gov.uk/leisure and tourism/museums and heritage/archive centre/default.html - I found them very helpful when I was there. I notice you have the name "Young" listed in your surnames; are your Youngs from Cumbernauld? I have a Jean Young (my 3xgreat-grandmother) in my tree, born about 1810 in Cumbernauld, who married a William Hall in 1828 and lived in Cumbernauld almost all her life. Her father's name was James McKenzie born in Falkirk Scotland. Janet's brother was James McKenzie born abt 1814 and died in Croy in 1869. James and Jean Gray McKenzie raised their family in and around Cumberanuld area. Janet married a William Young - they had a daughter who married Robert McIntosh. I am wondering if there are any decendants of them that might have more info on them and espcially the name of Janet's mother and any other siblings, besides James. Hello, all.. Does anyone have a picture of graphic of the Coat-of-Arms of the Grahams of Dougalston? I found a desciption of the arms in an old armorial in the Google-library, and I may try to draw it out. But, I'm wondering if anyone has a picture of the arms? Kelly Paul Graham Houstyon, Texas

Hi, I'm new to the list, so I thought I'd post my Dunbartonshire interests. I have the HALL family living in Cumbernauld in the 1800s: William HALL (born Glasgow about 1807) married Jean YOUNG (born Cumbernauld about 1810, daughter of James YOUNG and Margaret MUNGAL) in Cumbernauld on 3rd September 1828. At the 1841 census, they lived at Miltonneuk near Palacerigg, and at the 1851-1881 censuses they lived about 200 yards away at a cottage called Dibside (or Dubside, depending on the source). They had at least 12 children: Robert (born c. 1829) Margaret (born c. 1831) Jean (born c. 1833, presume died in childhood) John (born c. 1833) Janet (born c. 1835) James (born c. 1838) William (born c. 1840, presume died in childhood) George (born c. 1843) Jean (born c. 1846) Agnes (born c. 1849) William (born c. 1853) Marion (born c. 1856) I am descended from Robert, who married Margaret LOVE in 1852 in Glasgow. If anyone else is descended from, or has any information about, any of William and Jean's other children, I'd love to hear from them. Gillian

I had noticed your comments regarding James Shearer and Isobel Patterson. This family seems to fit as the James Shearer, brother to Margaret, but I'm just having difficulty confirming this. Unfortunately the marriage information doesn't identify his parents, which would confirm his connection. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The fires are many and SOME have been started by arsonists. They have just arrested two guys, however, there are more to catch.. 21 fires are still burning and our NZ fire service has just sent 95 firemen to help the Aussies. The heat over there has been intense for a long period and everything was tinder dry. One lightening strike can, does, and has started huge fires. When arsonists are involved - well some have re-lit fires which have been put out!! It is unbelievable! These people should be put in a car and a fire lit around them and make them wait till the last minute before the fire is extinguished. I'm in favour of bringing back the stocks and the whip for these people. Those proven guilty will get life sentences. The pictures we see here make me cry and reading about one man who lay in the muddy edge of a pond, who heard the animals screaming as they were burnt alive made me cry also --as I have done for the many people who were trapped. Some terrible stories. One can't imagine the agony of these people. "Mass murder" is what the Aussie premier calls it - he need to deal harshly with such firebugs. We here in NZ are being drenched with heavy summer rain for the second time in a week. How cruel - it makes one feel guilty to watch the rain and know how much it would mean in Victoria. Regards from NZ Lorna
