If you do happen to come across info on Cumbernauld graves, I would love to know where I could get some as well. My ggg gfather Rev. Hugh Park was the parish priest for Cumbernauld from 1848 to 1890, so not only would he have buried a lot of people there, he also would have been buried there in 1890, as well as my ggg gmother Ellen Maria (Carton) Park in 1884, and possibly my ggg uncle Daniel Cameron Park in 1885. There may be more Parks in the cemetery as well that I'm not aware of, as Hugh and Ellen had 10 children that I know of, and many grandchildren. Thanks! I have just noticed that in the 1841 census for Torosay, Argyll, where James was absent, his parents were housing one Alexander McDougal aged 20. Do you think these families were friends and that there was some kind of work experience going on? James spending time with the McDougalls and Alexander living with the McLeods? I don't know much about the history of these times. Do you know if that sort of thing went on then? I'll bet you wish you'd never responded to my message now!! Hope you'll stick with me though. 3. There's are a lot of BOWMAN families in and around Dumbarton/Clydebank but to say they are the same family that you seek would be a guess. You need to provide more information such as given name(s). I have quite a few out of Old KP but none of these are directly related to any surviving families still in the area. Cheers!!! 2. Henry Robert HALLAM
    3. Hi Maree I don't know know if there are any of your Bowman descendants still in Clydebank area but I cannot resist making a few comments about the name Bowman. Bow is a Scots word meaning a herd of cattle... usually cows. A bowman or bouman is a person who takes care of the cattle on a farm so it literally means a cowboy. A bowhouse is a cattle shed and there are a number of place names around Scotland and Northern England that bear this name. Bow or the Norse word bu owed its origin to the Norse settlers along the east coast of Britain. In North Yorkshire there is a place originally named bowhuis which was corrupted over the years to its current name Booze. So there it is, all you will ever need to know about the name Bowman and were afraid to ask! Aefauldlie Robin Hallam Duncan British Columbia

I have just looked up Janet Thomson in the 1841 census and found two possible families, one of whom lived in Row, Dunbartonshire. Since the Father was given as Dugald and the Mother, Marion this doesn't explain in one of the later census', when James was Head, the reference to Janet, Ma-in-Law but that may have been a mistake at the time. I think it's looking quite likely that it was my James boarding with the McDougalls. Cheers, Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: starkers1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.dnb.general/2706.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Laura, I'll give you what I have. James was born 15 May 1815 in Tiree, Argyll. He married Janet Thomson in Dunbarton, Dumbartonshire on 11 Dec 1847 and was a gardener. According to the 1861 census, his first child, Janet, was born in 1849 in Scotland. Elizabeth was born 27 Jul 1851 in Rafford, Moray and Jane Amelia on 26 Nov 1853 also in Rafford. The next child, William, was born on 31 Mar 1856 in Sussex, England as was his younger sister, Eleanora. So, although the census only gives the country where born, according to the dates it's likely that Janet M. was born in Dumbartonshire. Sometime between 1849 and 1851, the family moved to Rafford in Moray but I've been unable to find them in the 1851 census. They moved to England after Nov 1853 and before Mar 1856. I hope that helps. Unfortunately the 1841 censuses don't give a lot of information. Also ages were quite often rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so it didn't always reflect their true ages. I tried an 1851 census but couldn't find anything that matched their description. Do you know where he was in 1851? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: laurajobb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.dnb.general/2721.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I just did a quick search on Ancestry.ca for the 1851/61 census. In 1851 I found only one Mary Campbell with father named as Archibald. I'm not sure if this is the right one but here is the info: Mary Campbell age: 7 Approx birth year: 1844 relationship: daughter father's name: Archd mother's name: Ann gender: female where born: Campbeltown, Argyle parish number: 507 civil parish: Campbeltown county: Argyle address: Main Street occupation: scholar Household members: Archd Campbell age: 45 Ann Campbell 44 Margt Campbell 22 Archd Campbell 17 Dond Campbell 13 John Campbell 10 David Campbell 9 Mary Campbell 7 Colin Campbell 2 The 1861 census lists only part of the family, as I presume others have moved on. It lists Father, Mother, Archd 27, John 23 and Colin 12. I tried to find Mary but there are so many Mary's that age living as servants that it would have been hard to find out which one she was. I also checked the 1861 census for a James and Mary Simpson but couldn't find anything. Don't know if any of this helps, but hopefully it does Laura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
