My great great grandfather was John Walker born 1810 married to Jean Walker nee Blair. I cannot find any reference to his birth all info to date is taken from census. I have found a John Walker born to Coll and Janet Walker in Luss in 1810 . There is also a death certificate in existence for John Walker a weaver fron Cumbernauld with 2 different parents. Neither of whom I can find as having married each other nor had any children together. Has anyone any definative info? 3. Dear John, Thanks for sending the picture and information on Craigend Castle in New Kilpatrick. I found it interesting that this castle was associated with Mugdock Castle, once owned by the GRAHAM family. The mystery continues. Does anyone know of a good site or book explaining the expulsion of the Scots to Ireland and their return. It appears my once prominent (according to my grandmother) GRAHAMS, born in Ireland, returned to Scotland only to end up in the mines or perhaps servants in the very castles owned by their forefathers. 3. Likely at Castlehill along the roman wall due west of New KP (village). It was also a station on the Glasgow-Dumbarton line. Only one castle in New KP and that would be Mugdock but during this era Mugdock was essentially a ruin and unoccupied until the later part of the 18th century when James Smith built his home amongst the ruins. Craigend Castle which is across the road from Mugdock is actually a mansion house. My kin were the tenants of the farm at Craigend during this era. http://www.nls.uk/maps/counties/index.html Cheers!!! Thanks, Anne If you haven't already booked it, and you aren't spending the majority of your time in Edinburgh (or elsewhere on the East Coast) you might want to think about flying into Glasgow airport (GLA - not Prestwick). It is very close to Dumbarton and Alexandria. >From Edinburgh airport you need to follow the signs for the M8 westbound to Glasgow. Go straight through Glasgow and carry on the M8 to the Erskine Bridge (which means crossing the River Clyde twice, but an easier and faster journey than following the A82 from the centre of Glasgow). Once over the Erskine bridge you join the A82 going westbound about 4 miles out from Dumbarton. Bonhill is a suburb of Dumbarton and on the left just as you get there. Alexandria is a little bit further on and well signed from the A82 and Bonhill. Google maps are pretty useful for finding places and getting directions. These work for the UK and if you have either a street address or a postcode (UK version of the zip) then you can find where you want. If you have trouble with it wanting to show you bits of the States then try using www.google.co.uk -- James Kemp see Alexander at http://www.ajkemp.org/gallery/ or my games at http://www.full-moon.info/

    3. I like that you have a John in your list. And that Jeanie Brown and her husband William McGregor were the same generation and same place as Hugh McGregor. Very hopeful! Here is what I have so far: (Anne21MAY2009) Birth record for John & Malcolm McGregor, possible sibs of Hugh McGregor plus their parents John & Sarah. Bonhill Parish, Dunbarton, Scotland 1826 & 1828, both written on the same entry. Official extract was shipped via Royal Mail and I got it. Not transcribed--just a Xerox exactly like the one I copied off the official web site. I got these and all other pre-1855 records (for a small fee) from The Old Parish Register deaths and burials and marriages section of Scotland's searchable government web site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Not sure if I am allowed to scan to email and send it around to you, so here is my typed translation at the end of this email. I ran out of facts and now am reduced to speculation!!! I cannot find any documentation of my ancestor Hugh McGregor's birth or death or who his parents were. I have his marriage record--got an official extract of that too, but because it was before they started keeping good records in 1855, it did not list parents or place of birth. Do any of you have this information? I have his 1851 Glasgow census record with wife Agnes and his children and step children. I found a Hugh McGregor in the 1841 census, but I have no way to tell if that is my Hugh. By the 1861 census he had died (sometime between 1853 & 57) and his widow Agnes was living with her third husband and Hugh's children as well as her others. Fact: Hugh McGregor said in the 1851 census that he was born in Helensburgh. I have the date from my dad's notes as 7OCT1827 but no documentation. Helensburgh is in Rhu aka Row Parish. It is in Argyll & Butte County now but used to be in Dunbarton County. I searched the parish records for his birth record in Rhu Parish but found nothing. So I searched the whole county and found some McGregor couples living nearby in Bonhill Parish having children on a regular basis. This couple had 2 sons---a year before Hugh was born and a year after he was born, so I think it is possible Hugh could have been their middle, unrecorded child. Second down from the top--both sons on one entry. If this is they, the parents were John & Sarah Translation: John, lawful son of John McGregor & Sarah ???MacNicol? Carmichal???(I can't read it--what do you think?), in the Village of Bonhill, was born the 4th May, 1826. Malcolm, the lawful son of ditto, was born the 11th Nov. 1828 - - - - Supporting facts: 1. Agnes Cross (Hugh's wife), widowed 3 times, died in Stirling, Stirlingshire right next door to Dunbartonshire. (See this map:) http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-stirling.htm 2. Isabelle McAllister is the mother in the birth listed right under McGregor. Agnes Cross's first husband was David McAllister. Could be friends and neighbors. At the time she married Hugh, she had 3 McAllister children. 3. Hugh McGregor named his first (and only) son John, so according to The Scottish Naming System (was used all over the British Isles and brought from there to America: The 1st son named after the father's father. The 2nd son named after the mother's father. The 3rd son named after the father or uncle. The 1st daughter named after the mother's mother. The 2nd daughter named after the father's mother. The 3rd daughter named after the mother or an aunt. Subsequent children named after other relatives.)his father was probably named John. What do you all think?
