The Mary I mentioned, was my great, great grandmother, who had a son named James, he was my great grandfather. Mary may have had a brother named James, there is a mentioned of perhaps a child named that, who may have married a Sara Hislop. Mary's parents were named Alexander and Janet. So I don't think we're talking about the exact same people. There were a couple of James in the Rhind line but I can't find the Mary Whitelaw anywhere. I know this isn't of great help but it may eliminate us as being related. I hope you can find your relative, I know how hard this can be. Take care, Stephanie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. BlankHi all Sorry all but I forgot to pass this info on at the time. It is a quite useful web-site as, amongst other things, its mapping shows the Parish Boundaries. Regards Les ===================== The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) are the partners in a new venture: ScotlandsPlaces. This combines catalogues and digital copies of maps, plans, photographs and other records from each institution to offer an online service, primarily for the benefit of local historians, but also for other researchers, including archaeologists, social and economic historians, genealogists, and architectural historians. Utilising innovative technology, developed by the University of Edinburgh’s Geography Department, the project builds on recent work by the NAS and RCAHMS in digital imaging of records, gazetteer construction and geographical information systems (GIS). In terms of historical records, the main contributions to the site from the NAS include maps and plans from the Register House Plans series, the farm horse tax rolls (1797-98) and the Medcial Officer of Health reports for Scottish counties in 1891. The resulting website was launched by Culture Minister, Michael Russell MSP, as part of the Scotland’s Global Impact Conference at Inverness on 22 October. The prototype website will be undergoing user testing between October 2009 and March 2010 and you can tell us what you think of it by trying it at www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk and filling in the feedback form. =====================

As I have been searching for my 2X Great Grandfathers brother William Campbell for many years now, The William Campbell I have in my tree was the son of Alexander Campbell and Agnes Kelly, all were born originally in Kirkcolm,Wigtownshire,Scotland. But moved to Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland between 1852 and 1856. They first lived at College Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland then in the High Street,Dumbarton. William Campbell was a twin he and his brother was born 1 Mar 1839, but his twin brother Gilbert Campbell died at College Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland on 30 July 1856. I have only been able to find William Campbell on the 1841 and 1851 Census and then he dissappered and was not with his parents or siblings after 1851 Census, but asummed he moved to Dumbarton with them. Why I contacted you was because of the Dumbarton and Boiler Maker & Rivetter Connection. You see My 2X Great Grandfather Andrew Campbell was also a Boiler Smith & Boiler Maker and Rivetter in different censuses over the years. If your William Campbell senior was related to mine, He was the 10th Child, my 2X Great Grandfather Andrew was born 1 March 1837 exactly two years older than William and Gilbert Campbell. Although my 2X Great Grandfather Andrew moved to Durham and then to Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. But His parents and siblings stayed in the Dumbarton Area for a few more years but then tragically many of William's siblings died in young Adulthood apart from his brother Hugh Campbell born about 1846 in Stranear, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Hugh lived at first 7 then 14, Burnside Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Hugh died in 1922 I know William also had a brother named Robert who was born about 1853 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland. But was on the 1861 census with his parents Alexander and Agnes Campbell and his siblings. 1861 Scotland Census about Alexander Campbell Name: Alexander Campbell Age: 65 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Agnes Gender: Male Where born: Kirkcolm, Wigtonshire Registration Number: 496 Registration district: Dumbarton Civil Parish: Dumbarton County: Dumbartonshire Address: 129 High St (close) Occupation: Shoemaker ED: 2 Household schedule number: 58 Line: 14 Roll: CSSCT1861_67 Household Members: Name Age James Caldwell 20 Agnes Campbell 59 Agnes Campbell 30 Alexander Campbell 65 Hugh Campbell 15 Jane Campbell 36 Robert Campbell 8 Jane Kelly 40 James Sterling 23 Here below is Hugh Campbell in the 1881 Census Here are the 1881 Census details of Hugh Campbell - 7 Burnside Place, Dumbarton Hugh Campbell - Head - M - 34yrs. - b. Thank you in advance for any information you can share with me. I have lots of information I could share with you if we are connected, here is hoping we are related as I have been searching for information on what happened to William Campbell for over 10 years now. Hello List, I am hoping there is someone out there that can help me please. My 2X Great Grandfather Andrew Campbell had a brother named Hugh Campbell who was married to Elizabeth Cunningham in Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England on 12 Mar 1869. They moved to Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland by about 1870. Hugh and Elizabeth Campbell had 8 children all together but their first son Alexander born 6 Jun 1871 and died 24 Apr 1872 at 2, College Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. And then were living at first 7, Burnside Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Then moved to number 14, Burnside Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Their other children were Margaret Campbell born 1869 in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. Margaret was married to John Young on 31 Dec 1889 at 7, Burnside Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire. After Alexander born 1871 William Cunningham Campbell born 21 Apr 1873 at High Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. William married Agnes Shaw on 30 Dec 1898 at 4, Burnside Street, Dumbarton. Jeanie/Jane Campbell born 27 Apr 1875 in Dumbarton, Jeanie or sometimes known as Jane married Andrew Mitchell on 30 Aug 1901 at 14, Burnside Terrace, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Hugh Campbell son of Hugh and Elizabeth Campbell was born about 1877 in Dumbarton. Hugh married Elizabeth Jane Watson on 9 Jun 1905 at Knoxland Parish Church, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Alexander Cunningham Campbell born about 1879 at 7, Burnside Street, Dumbarton. I think he must have died after 1881 Census and before 1891 Census. John Campbell born about 1882 at 7, Burnside Street, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. John married Mary McKinlay Shanks on 2 Sep 1910 at 147, Glasgow Rd, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. And Lastly Thomas Campbell born about 1888 at 7, Burnside Street, Dumbarton. Thomas married Helen Morrison on 15 Oct 1915 at Parish Church Manse, Kirkinton Hill, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It is mainly Thomas Campbell and Helen Morrison that I am interested in finding more information on, as I think it is his Great Granddaughter that I am in contact with, but I can't find Thomas and Helen's marriage certificate on my pc now, so would like to know if there is someone with knowledge of this family out there so I can help her. Thomas and Helen had sons named Thomas, Hugh & Robert Morrison Campbell and they could have had a daughter Helen. Kylie has mentioned that her Grandfather Robert Morrison Campbell migrated to Australia sometime before 1948 apparently Thomas, Hugh and Robert Morrison Campbell all went to live in Australia. Is there someone that recognizes these Campbell's please. My Campbell's originated from Ayrshire, Scotland. then from Wigtownshire My 3X Great Grandparents were Alexander Campbell and Agnes Kelly their sons were My 2X Great Grandfather Andrew Campbell born 1 Mar 1837 in Stewarton, Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Andrew married my 2X Great Grandmother Elizabeth Fergus on 9 Nov 1857 at St, Hilda's Parish, Hartlepool, Durham, England. And Hugh Campbell born about 1846 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland. And died 4 Jun 1922 at 14, Burnside St, Dumbarton. He married Elizabeth Cunningham on 12 Mar 1869 in Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Elizabeth Campbell nee Cunningham died 21 Mar 1921 also at 14, Burnside Street, Dumbarton. Any information on any of them would be great. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves

I can give you the line of your family way back, assuming one thing, which is that John Mclay, who married Maggie Stark gives his parents as William Mclay and Cecilia Sharp but in fact he was the illegitimate child of Cecilia Sharp born 19 May 1865 at Speedwell, Clackmannan, his mother and William only marrying in January the following year. William Mclay's name does not appear on John's birth certificate but he brought him up as his own and it is very likely he was his son. In a repeating pattern, John Mclay and Maggie Stark's son William was also illegitimate but his father, John Mclay,'s name is there on his birth certificate. Allowing for (my) human error, I have your earliest ancestors as John Mclay born about 1690 and Janet Hardie born about 1695. Their children were all born in St Ninian's. In 10 years you may well have already have got this!! Regards, Janet PS Would your husband be interested in joining the DNA research? I have the 1841 census and the marriage as well, but not sure who William's father is although the most likely candidate age-wise is John Risk chr. 6 Feb 1759 and wife Elizabeth Hay. It seems that they christened/baptized children a bit older, so I am assuming that was the case with John. The Scottish government has a website for which you must pay for copies of the birth, death, marriage and census certificates. The website is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk You will see from the site. The fee is fairly reasonable, but does get expensive as your tree grows! You can get a lot of information from the Later Day Saints site for free: http://www.familysearch.org Don't give up on this site. There may be other information that you can use. The census transcriptions (although sometimes can contain errors) are invaluable for determining the children born to couples, names, etc. There are military records, and more that may be useful. Hope this information helps. Sandy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
