In my records I have the words "James Govan, slater, and Margaret Gall, both in this parish, gave in their names for proclamation July 24th 1840". Does this mean the same as having your banns read in England or is it actually a marriage? Dina Broughton <dina@clara.net>

    3. Hello Ramona I don't have anything directly linking to your Alexander Chalmers but do have Chalmers ancestors slightly earlier in Roseneath and Row (Helensburgh) in Dumbartonshire. My ancestor is John Chalmers who married Margaret Niven on 28 June 1791 in Roseneath. He had 2 daughters and possibly other children. The daughters were Margaret who married Alexander McAuslan in November 1829 in Row and Christian (or Christian Mary) who married Duncan McCallum on 17 December 1839 in Helensburgh. Christian Chalmers McCallum was my great great grandmother and was born about 1805. I don't have a birth date for Margaret. There were other relations named Chalmers, as Christian's death in 1874 was registered by a cousin named either John or James Chalmers. If any of these names link with your family, we may be related. 3. Hello Barbara Thanks for the useful link to a course on old handwriting - a great place to start. Those who want to take the subject further, in a more academic vein, might try a standard work on the subject which has the advantage of being Scottish in its specialisation. (There were some important differences between the standard styles in old Scotland compared with ye olde Englonde!) It is: Grant G. Simpson: "Scottish handwriting 1150-1650 - an introduction to the reading of documents" (Edinburgh: Bratton Publishing, 1973) ISBN: 0859750027 It covers such documents as testaments, deeds, account books, and so on - those documents which just MIGHT, if you're very lucky, take that family traced through OPRs to the late 1600s that generation or two further back. I think it is still in print. If this information has appeared before, please excuse me, as I am relatively new to the Dunbartonshire group. Best wishes Arthur Arthur F. 2. Arthur F. Jones
    3. Hello Hope There was a PURDIE family originating in Ulster which settled in Cardross (near Dumbarton) in the 1840s, with descendants aplenty to the present day. Do you think this might be the one? The 1851 Census for Cardross (Enumeration Book 3):- Ardardan Offices* Robert Purdy [sic]** Hd Mar 27 Agricultural Labourer Born Ireland Matilda Wife Mar 24 " " John Son 2 " D'tonshire,Cardross *Offices - i.e. outbuildings for farm or estate workers; sometimes included an "office", or room for the conduct of business, distribution of wages, etc. **The name was thereafter spelled "Purdie" Also at Ardardan Offices were large numbers of Garvens. If I recall correctly, Matilda Purdie's maiden name was Garven. There are Johns, Roberts, Hughs and Matildas in subsequent generations. A Hugh Purdie painted one of the rooms in my house in 1978. I'm afraid he passed away some years ago. 1. Surname SLACKSLY
    2. George Sykes
    3. Greetings Everyone I have a typewritten GRO extract of an 1872 marriage entry that lists the maiden name of the bride's mother as Christina SLACKSLY (married to a John COOPER). I have traced the family back to the Parish of Kirkintilloch in the year 1851. My dilemma is in the surname SLACKSLY. I have yet to find this name in any census that I've looked at or on any surname list that I've searched. It didn't appear on Scots ORIGINS either when I did a search last week nor did anything remotely resembling the name show up on a marriage search to John COOPER. Has anyone come across this surname in any of their research, especially the 1851 census for Kirkintilloch? I'm starting to get the impression that the name was transcribed incorrectly when the extract was typed up in 1985. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. 3. Hello All My apologies to the list but I responded to Arthur Jones directly but the Mail Delivery System would not accept his email address and consequently I do not know if he received my reply. If you're out there Arthur, here is what I sent you privately: Greetings Arthur Thank you for the response and yes I would like to make contact with William COOPER if he is interested and researching that name in Kirkintilloch. Unfortunately I don't have much to add to what I previously sent on my original email. John COOPER's wife Christina was listed with the surname SLACKSLEY on their daughter's marriage certificate but I don't know if she was originally from Kirkintilloch. Your help is much appreciated. Regards George Sykes, Winnipeg, Canada
