    3. >Hi Subscribers! >Here's a new service that Rootsweb offers. I've tried >it myself, and it really works. Give it a try. > ROOTSWEB PUTS IT TOGETHER. Have you ever wished you could look up *everything* at RootsWeb that relates to a particular surname? Now you can! By going here; http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/ Click on the letter of the alphabet for the surname of interest, and then select it from the list that appears. This will take you to a "surname resource cluster," where you can search for your surname in numerous databases. For example, using BANKSTON you would find: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BANKSTON/>, where you could search "B" WEB SITES, the OBITUARY DAILY TIMES, or: o The ROOTSWEB SURNAME LIST (RSL). RSL search options are by surname, Soundex, or Metaphone (the latter two are "sounds- ike" matches). You can search for updates from the past two months, >last month, last week, or for any mention. > o >TRANSCRIPTION PROJECTS. 3. I read the following on the Dumfries-Galloway list only last month! There are several similar letters which you can read in the Archives. "P J Fraser-Tibbett" has been involved in many instances outside the framework of sharing information. These spammers are the ones that are soliciting names within Rootsweb groups. I would believe that it is fair to warn each other of their presence and true objectives. The rules have changed now we can freely interchange amongst our selves information that was traditionally indexed and sold. A scanner, a program such as Xerox Pagis and OCR'ring into EXCEL can make a list in minutes that we can share, these guys are struggling to find new ways to make a dollar(pound). They don't have the time or patience to sort the information from the archives they want us to the work for them to profit.

    2. Hi listers, I hate to show my ignorance, but someone on this site mentioned Proscripted names back a month or so ago in regard to an Anne Brown I had found among my Scottish ancestors in the 1700's. I hadn't known about proscripted names and wondered whether someone could share a little historical background with me. (There may even be other beginners on the list who are unaware of this.) Thank you, Sharman Badgett-Young

    3. Hello Moyna A selection of post-1855 monumental inscriptions for Dumbarton Cemetery was made by me many years ago, and deposited in Dumbarton Public Library. They amount to about 10% only, though. Dumbarton Cemetery is fairly large. There is no cemetery at Balloch, the nearest one being Alexandria. I'm not sure what you mean by Dennystown Cemetery. West Bridgend Churchyard is in the area, and I believe that it was one of the few cases where the Mitchells, in their book of pre-1855 monumental inscriptions for Dunbartonshire, actually copied ALL inscriptions regardless of date. If you send details, I can certainly look up the Dumbarton Cemetery selection, and the West Bridgend inscriptions, but for both Alexandria and Dumbarton Cemeteries to be checked properly, you would have to contact the Cemetery Superintendent, Alexandria Cemetery, Overtoun Street, Alexandria, G83.... [not sure, off-hand, about the rest of the postal (i.e. zip) code, but that should suffice]. He has charge of the lair registers for both Alexandria and Dumbarton Cemeteries. You would, of course, have to have a fairly accurate idea of death dates. Hope this is a help. Best wishes Arthur Arthur F. 2. Judith Neville
    3. Hi Listers, I'm a newbie to this list. I am interested in tracing my g.grandfather James Neill born in 1853, his father was also James Neill. His death certificate stated he came from Dunbarton. I am uncertain whether this is Dumbarton or Dunbartonshire, I do know he worked in the shipyards which I think were the Clyde shipyards, his occupation in Australia was as a blacksmith so I guess he would have done similar work in Scotland. Would SKS have access to either the 1861 or 1871 census for a lookup for me. He was in Australia by 1881. Thanks in Advance Judith Neville Australia Researching Neill (Dunbartonshire), Sneddon (Lanarkshire, Stirlingshire , Mid and West Lothian) Neville (London and Berkshire) Warren (anywhere) Worley (England) Farrow (England)

    2. Wendy
    3. I was wondering if anyone on the list knows the history of the demise of the Lennox family. As a Lennox researcher I am just curious to know how this family faded out. I have found mention that in 1927 various lands and properties were sold to the Glasgow Parish Council and was wondering who was the last title holder, did he die without heirs, were there no claimants for the title and lands etc? Did he leave no will of succession? Wendy Simes Sydney Australia
