I'd be grateful for any help in identifying exactly where the following places are in Arrochar, Dunbarton. My g.g.g grandparents, Dougal Campbell and Catherine McDougall were married in Old Tarbert in 1792 (where is Old Tarbert in relation to Tarbert?). Their son Colin was baptised in Nov 1792 while the family was living in Stuckgown, Arrochar, and their daughter Mary was born in 1795 while the family was living in Garabel, Arrochar. Dougal was a forester and by 1805 had moved to Pollockshaws where he was a forester employed by Sir John Maxwell at Pollock and where he married for a second time, to a Mary Watson, by whom he had a daughter Agnes and sons James and William. Frances, You might want to check out Scots Origins. There is a fee, but it looks like they might have what you are looking for. http://www.origins.net/GRO/index.html Hope this helps some, Amy
Barb, No, I couldn't find these families in the OPR records. Patrick & Mary (Craig) Hendry's marriage & children are on the IGI. I got their parents names from their death certificates. I have not been able to find Hugh Hendry or Felix Hendry on any census records. I suspect that they were probably from Ireland. Thanks for answering my e-mail. Jean White
My grandfather, Thomas Smith Cameron Swanston, was born in Dumbarton on January 10th, 1898. Grew up in Dumbarton Oaks. His parents names were William and Isobel Smith Cameron Swanston, brother's name William, sister's name Isabella. Thomas S. C. Swanston moved from Scotland to Chicago in the spring/summer of 1922, where he later met and married my grandmother. Sadly, he died when my father was 5 years old. I would like to find any living relatives who may be children/grandchildren of his brother or sister, particularly those who may still be living in the Dumbarton/Glasgow area. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thomas Andrew Swanston aswanston@eastky.net
Are there OPR records online from Scotland/England? Thanks, Frances Bennett Maddox chkfran@gulftel.com

Betsy, if you found the marriage record on the IGI, hopefully, there should be a film listed...if you got the film of the original parish record, it may say, Peter Law "of" and Mary Bain "of", telling you where they were from...which, of course, doesn't mean they were born there...but at least it's a lead Then you go to that parish and see if you can find the Christening records.... Hi Barbara, Yes - I have located the family on the 1881 census. The family, Potts is the primary line, seem to have lived in New Kilpatrick from about 1860 onwards. They were coal miners, originally from Ireland. When I checked the census there seemed to be a large number of Coal miners living in the area that were originally from Ireland. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about this community. Sarah

Greetings to all from down under. As a new list member I present my three links to Dunbartonshire ... 1 My mother served as a VAD at Drymen Hospital during WWII 2 My grandfather E Stewart COOK and family lived in Helensburgh from before1921, when my younger aunt was born, until the mid 1946 weddings of his two daughters, after which Grandpa moved to Fife with his elder daughter and son-in-law. (His wife Jessie BUCHANAN had died in 1934) 3 His mother-in-law Isabella BUCHANAN {nee COLQUHOUN} was born in Row parish (Garelochhead) on 24 April 1857, the youngest of 6 children born to Richard COLQUHOUN {Engineer in Steamer} and Isabella BUCHANAN, who were married in Row parish in 1845. Genealogically speaking, I am most interested in any links to this last family - other children were Agnes b 1845, Catherine b 1846, Christina b 1848, Richard bc 1851 and Margaret bc 1852. The first three were also born in Row parish, but the last two were christened in Rothesay, Bute, before the family reappeared in Garelochhead for Isabella's birth. Richard COLQUHOUN may have been born in Glasgow, while Isabella BUCHANAN was born in Kilbrandon, Argyll. Looking for information re William GALLACHER who married Isabella WAUGH in Bonhill or Alexandria in 1887. William was living on Burn Street in 1887. Haven't been able to get a hold of the 1891 census yet.
The IGI is back with a couple of new features. *Through Custom Search you can search the International Genealogical Index for a specific event and year. Also, if you enter only the names of the parents (full name of the father and full name of the mother), you can find all of their children. Only relevant if both parents full names listed, which cuts out the great majority as the mothers surname is not usually written. *Through Custom Search you can search Ancestral File using any combination of the following: birth year, christening year, marriage year, death year, or Ancestral File number (AFN Barbara Lewis lewisb@vitrex.net
I am trying to locate the whereabouts of Ellen McKenzie (born 19.12.1859) at the time of the 1881 census. Her sister Helen is found still in Dunbartonshire and her brother Donald in Eastwood, Renfrewshire. Another sister Priscilla had migrated to Australia. Could someone with access to the 1881 census CDs, help me out with a search for Ellen. She may have married a Mr Henderson by then but if so, not in Scotland. Many thanks. Dominique Young
