Hi Listers: I have a John Howat that was born 21 May 1868 in Cowan's Bog, five months later he was vaccinated at Luggie Bridge - both addressess in Kirkintilloch Parish. Can anyone tell me where these places might have been? I have been searching for the where-abouts of the Howat family (actualy his grandparent's) in Kirkintillock, but have not found them on the Census. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello Joanne The films I was referring to are films of the actual certificates not just the indexes. There are films of the indexes which cover all births etc for the whole of Scotland for a year. These just give the names of the child, the parish or registration district and the registered number (this is the number of the registration within the parish e.g. the first child registered in a parish for the year would be number 1). The certificate films are organised by county - e.g. all the births for Dunbartonshire would be on one or perhaps two films (Lanarkshire with Glasgow may take more films for one year). On each film, the births for the first parish in the alphabet appear first in order of registration, followed by the second parish. In Ross-shire for example, a certificate film starts with Alness, followed by Applecross, Contin etc. There is a further twist with Inverness-shire and Ross-shire - these two counties have the mainland parishes first in alphabetical order followed by the island parishes (Skye and the Hebridies etc) in alphabetical order. Argyll has a few islands so that county may do the same - I haven't had to have an Argyll film on loan yet so can't be sure. Births and deaths for a county quite often spread over more that one film, but marriages frequently fit on one film for the whole county (except perhaps for Lanarkshire with its larger population). So if you have a date and a county for your ggrandad (1855-1875 + 1881 + 1891), order the film or films for the whole county. With Inverness, you may not need to order the second film unless you think he may have been born in the islands or in a mainland parish towards the end of the alphabet. If you are not sure of the year, a number of 1855-1875 births are now included in the IGI so try there to get some possibilities. Or the index films may give you a some possibilities. I am not sure what it costs to hire a film at your local LDS but here in New Zealand it costs NZ$4.50 per film and it may be possible to get a print off the film when you have found the right certificate for a further small charge - much cheaper than ordering a certificate from Edinburgh + there is the possibility of finding other relatives on the same film at no extra cost. Have you found the family i the 1881 census (if they were still in Scotland) as that may narrow down the parish and date for your ggrandad's birth. Hi all,can anyone tell me where i can find a census for HELENSBURGH around the 1920's as i need to trace my grandparents, hope someone can help. ken
Hi Lesley, I read your reply to Doug and would like to know, these birth microfilm are different from the birth index? I looked at those and found very little. So these birth films are by county? not parish? sorry for all the questions, but if your suggestions may be a way for me to find my ggrandad. I do have the name of his parents but I am not sure where he was born. But it is very possibly in Inverness. But I had no idea of which parish. So there there is still hope for me yet. Thank you for the information. Joanne ;-)
My second family I am searching for is STODDART. Robert STODDART and Elizabeth PATERSON married in 27 July 1795 in MidLothian had one child James 1796, Temple Midlothian, the rest of their children were born in Gargunnock, Sterlingshire. These children were, George 1801, Henry 1803, Ann 1805, Ann 1807, Janet 1809, Grizel 1811 (I believe known as Grace), Walter 1814, Maria 1816 and Robert 1821. This family disappeared from Gargunnock, but I found Henry in the 1881 Census in Dunbarton, Dunbartonshire. This made sense, and I have begun tracing the family back through the census. What I do know is that Henry who was a farmer married first Jean BERRY 31 August, Renfrew, Renfrew and secondly, Jean/Jane Young 26 February 1836 in Renfrew, Renfrew. Henry and the second Jean had three children that I have found on the IGI Agnes born 1836, Robert b. 1838 and John Dixon born 21 October 1842 all in Cardross, Dunbarton. Grace married John Miller CUMMING 20 December 1839 in Airth, Sterlingshire. Where their seven children were born. After the death of John, Grace moved to Glasgow with her children, first living with brother Walter and family. Walter married Margaret BABTIE 3 December 1849 in Dunbarton, and they moved to Glasgow where Walter was a coal merchant. Four daughters all born in Glasgow. Any infromation about this family would be greatly appreciated. Isobel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I am new to the list. I would like to find out more about my HOWAT family. What I know, George HOWAT (parents William HOWAT and Jane ?) born about 1819 and died in the Poor House in Kirkintilloch 14 November 1873. George married Marion BURNS, no date, and they had three children that I have found: John Burns born about 1845, Marion born about 1846 and Ann born about 1848 - all in Kirkintillock. I have yet to find this famiy in a census. It would appear that all three children left Kirkintillock and moved, John to Kilsyth where he was married to Margaret LOCKHART in 1864, Marion and Ann to Glasgow where they were both married. Marion to John Storer BLYTH 28 December 1866 and Ann to James HAMILTON in 3 April 1874. I have no information on Marion BURNS as to birth and death. She apparenty died as George married Margaret WARDROSS at some point. I have checked both the death and marriage indexes, but with no luck. Anyone with any information about these families would be greatly appreciated. Isobel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Hello Doug If your Alexander was born in 1875 in Scotland, you should be able to order the film of the births for the county for that year to view at your nearest LDS - much cheaper than ordering a certificate from Edinburgh and you may find other related births in the same parish or elsewhere in the county. Being in the more heavily populated part of Scotland, the births for 1875 for the county are probably on two or three films so you would need to check that you get the one with Rutherglen (the films have the parishes in alphabetical order). As births, deaths and marriages for 1855-1875 for Scotland are all available on film you may get the parents' marriage and births of other children on films for other years. The 1875 birth certificate for Alexander should also show the date and place of the parents' marriage. Dear all This is my first message on your site, so hello to all. I am specifically looking for one relative. I am tracing my Murray roots. I found the family on the 1881 Census CDs. At the time of the census they were living in Birkenhead, Cheshire (now part of Merseyside). The census shows that one of the children (Alexander C Murray) was born in "Rutherglen, Cumberland, England" in about 1875. As those that can guess where I am leading will no doubt appreciate I had a heck of a job finding the location. Cumberland is in what is now Cumbria. There was no trace of Rutherglen there. Eventually I realised that I had found one of the CD transcription errors. The address should, of course, have read Cumbernauld (Scotland not England). I am basically writing to ask if someone can confirm my assumption about Cumberland/Cumbernauld. The Murray family I am tracing started out in Creich (in Sutherland according to the CD-ROMS) which according to my atlas is actually on Tayside, not in Sutherland. They then moved to Rutherglen and ended up in Birkenhead, losing the mother/wife of the family en-route. I have yet to track down exactly when she passed away. They actually started their journey before Creich, but that is another trail I have to follow. A long Journey in the late 1800s with six children. Grateful for the confirmation requested above. Grateful also for any idea as to where to look (via the internet) to find Alexander's birth certificate. Regards to all Doug (in India)
Hi Everyone Thank you everyone who messaged me with details about James DAVIE people they had found. Unfortunately, none match. I am trying to get 1841 Census details for Greenock as a last resort to try and find some details on this man, even an AGE at 1841 would help. He is not listed in the 1851 Census for Greenock. So far I have extensively searched the LDS Library, Scots Origin site, Familysearch site online and just about everything else I can think of and still cannot find anything about this illusive ancestor. The details I have for my James DAVIE are: James DAVIE married Elizabeth HALLIDAY on 21.6.1816 in Greenock, Renfrew. I have their Marriage *Certificate* (ordered and received through Scots Origins) --- it doesn't tell me a thing. I have copies of their 2 sons birth and marriage details - James Davie born Greenock East 11.4.1819 - married Jessie Taylor, Rothesay, Bute 25.9.1851 - and - Samuel Ewing Davie born Greenock Middle 14.7.1824, married Catherine Campbell, Greenock 1.1.1852. James DAVIE's wife, Elizabeth HALLIDAY, died in 1867, aged 84 (born 1783). She is buried in Greenock Cemetary (Plot #528) She is listed as a Widow and James DAVIE is NOT buried in the same gravesite, so cannot get his age or details from there. All I know about James DAVIE, who was my paternal GG Grandfather is that he was a Silversmith in Greenock in the 1800's (plus his wife and kids details) .....H-E-L-P!! I have photos, Family Bible (given to and bought to Australia by his son, James) and silver crafted by this man but no AGE or place he was born, who his parents were or anything else! Very frustrating! If anyone has ANY ideas, please, please let me know just how I can track down this Great Great Grandfather of mine!!! Does anyone on the list have access to a book entitled; "Strathendrick and it Inhabitants" John Guthrie SMITH - 1896 Glasgow ?? Ron
Hi All Does any researcher have access to the 1841 Census information for Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland? I am trying (desperately) to get some information (age, place of birth - at least) on my James DAVIE so that I can do further research. I received information that he is NOT mentioned in the 1851 Census, although his wife, Elizabeth (Halliday) DAVIE, age 68, and his son, Samuel Ewing DAVIE, age 26, are. In 1841 this DAVIE family would look like this: James DAVIE, Silversmith, age? (guessing he would be between 55-65) (no idea of place of birth) Elizabeth (Halliday) DAVIE, 58, wife (no idea where she was born) James DAVIE, 22, son (no idea what his occupation was) born Greenock East Parish Samuel Ewing DAVIE, 16, son (no idea what his occupation was) born Greenock Middle Parish. I would appreciate any information SKS can give me so that I can search further for my GG Grandfather. I have searched everywhere and cannot find any birth or death records for James DAVIE - I have his marriage *certificate* but that doesn't tell me anything except he married Elizabeth Halliday in Greenock Middle, Renfrew on 21.6.1816. Many Thanks Janelle Canberra, Australia aurora@dynamite.com.au Researching: Davie, Halliday, Taylor, Barr, Campbell
Hello; I recently joined this list after a lead that pointed to the Buchanan's and Murray's of Drummakill and Polmaise / Touchadam. I particular I am interested communicating with fellow researchers that share an interest in Lillias MURRAY married William BUCHANAN abt 1730 son of William ?? 2 of thier children Archibald & Lillas who married a John BALD merchant in Leith of Drummakill. Thier daughter married 2 times 1- LT.Frederick Benjamin Doyle BARTLET 2 - Angus CAMPBELL father of Sir Donald CAMPBELL. >From the first marriage a Benjamin Bartlett or Bartlett-BUCHANAN MD. abt 1785 . Is there a source for burials/headstones at these locations and I am looking for the burials of the above people. I am willing to exhange information or research time. I live in Toronto and have access to large Canadian archives. Ron
Hi All Following publication of some of the contents of McPhun's 1835 "The Scottish Tourist's Steam Boat Guide" to the ButeshireGenWeb list earlier this year, I have now loaded the Introduction, Tours 1 to 4 and 15, plus maps (2) and a listing of "STEAM-VESSELS in the TRADE OF CLYDE" as of 1835 at http://cookfmly.rootsweb.com/mcphun1835/ Please note that there is (at the time of writing) a problem with the Counter at RootsWeb, but this does not prevent the index page from loading. As the note says, I'm working on it, but Tour 5 is the longest in the book, so enjoy the rest in the meantime. Have you had a look at the 1873 birth certificate for Thomas James Bottomly - as the birth was in Scotland, it should be available on the film of Dunbartonshire births for that year which can be ordered on loan through your nearest LDS. If you are not sure of the exact date you might need to check the indexes through Scots Origins if your nearest LDS doesn't have the indexes there permanently. That name would not be very common in Scotland so you should be able to identify your ancestor fairly quickly in the index. The birth certificate will show parents' names including mother's maiden name and possibly also the date and place of their marriage. If the father was in the army it may also name his regiment. My mother was born in Kilwinning, Ayrshire 7 April l903 and came to America in l922. Her father was Thomas James Bottomley, born l873, presumably either at or in the environs of Dumbarton Castle, where his father, according to the family tradition, was in the British Army and stationed. This soldier--my great-greatgrandfather--died between l879 and l88l. I am attempting to find out his identity. At present we do not even know his first name. His wife was Mary, and there is some indication her maiden name was Hayman, and that she was born in Ireland. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to look or what organisation to approach to find the details a claim that were made for an estate. The claim were not successful. All the individuals involved in the claim are long since dead, all that remains is the knowledge that a claim was made and everyone contributed to send legal representation to England to present the case. We are not interested in the legalities of the claim itself but in the genealogy information which may have been presented at the time. The claim was in connection with Lennox properties in Stirling Shire which were sold in 1927 to the Glasgow Parish Council. The claim I presume would have been well before this date.
