Hello, I am new to the list and have a very basic question that I hope someone will be willing and able to answer for me. My paternal grandfather, James YOUNG (born c. 1892), was listed as living at : 20 Dumbarton Road, Old Kilpatrick at the time of his marriage to Isabella JACK on 13 August 1918. Could someone tell me what the area was like, possibly refer me to a source for photographs of the time and place, and inform me of what James, by profession a journeyman joiner, might likely have been doing for employment in the area? I know he might well have traveld to another site for work but was Old Kilpatrick, by any chance, an area known for woodwork? I will be most appreciative of any information. Thank you. I have copies of old letters written by my gg grandfather, John Carnie from Scotland to his son, John David Karney, in the United States in Texas. They were written in the early 1880's. The letters list an address of Glasgow Road Bridge by Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire, Scotland. Another letter is from John Carnie's daughter, Sarah Carnie Gemmel, to her nephew, John David Karney. Her address looks like 52 Johnscroft St., Greenock, Scotland in 1910. Can anyone tell me how to locate where these addresses were in Kirkintilloch and Greenock? Looking for any links to John Carnie b. in Ireland and d. in Scotland. Known children named John David, Sarah, Daniel, Barnie, and Patrick. Letters indicate that Daniel was a foreman over a factory in Australia; Sarah m. a Gremmel and lived in Greenock; Patrick, his wife, and young daughter lived in Hamilton; Barnie was not heard from; and John David had immigrated to the U.S. as a young boy, possibly as a stowaway.
Hi listers; I have Andrew Paul who is shown in the 1881 census as a Marine Engineer (Master employing 146 men & 33 Boys). Can anyone suggest how I can find out what the name of his company might have been? Any help greatly appreciated. Isobel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Hi Listers: . I have a Henry STODDART who was a farmer in Kirkton, Dunbarton in 1856 Anyone tell me where this is? Would it be the name of his farm? Any help greatly appreciated. Isobel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Looking for information about "William Blain" Photograph Studio which operated in Dumbarton and Alexandria from about 1890 - 1910. Brian Manson Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Hi Listers: Would anyone have access to the MIs of Cardross? If so, I would appreciate a look up for the following names: Robert STODDART and his wife, Elizabeth PATERSON (they were married in 1795) I have no idea when they might have died, but probably after 1825 Jean BERRY, the wife of Henry STODDART who died between 1832 and 1836. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Isobel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I want to thank those of you who sent me lovely messages and even electronic cards of condolences on the passing of my mother...my sweet little "Bankie" from Dunbartonshire. I was so overwhelmed with your kind sentiments and that will always mean a great deal to me. What a wonderful group you are! Mom died here in Utah, and after a service here we took her back to Michigan (I drove 4000 miles round trip) for a service and burial there. She was 87 and I will dedicate a "Clydebank" page to her and link it to my GenWeb Dunbartonshire Home page Her 94 year old brother, who now lives in Texas, is the only surviving member of our Gillon family, all born in Clydebank. Coming back into this house without Mom has been overwhelmingly emotional for me today, but I'm glad to be back. Thank you all again Barbara Lewis, list manager lewisb@vitrex.net Dunbartonshire County, Scotland GenWeb Host http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctdnb/index.htm

I am hoping there is some kind soul who would be able to do a look-up for me on the 1891 census. I am searching the parents of both JOHN POLLOK STRUTHERS (b1862) and MARION RUSSEL WALKER (b 1863) who married on 28 Mar 1884. He emigrated to Canada in 1890 - but she didn't leave til 1891. Her parents are WILLIAM WALKER and MARY BENNIE (of Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton) and his parents are ROBERT STRUTHERS and JANE DEANS POLLOK ( of Eastwood, Renfrew). thank-you for any help anyone can give me shelley in BC, Canada
Hi listers: Does anyone know what the vaccination in 1895 would have been for? Would it have been for T.b? Isobel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Hello Ken There would have been a census done in 1921 but this won't be publicly released (under the present legislation) until 2021. The next census due for public release if the 1901 census due in 2001 and apparently going straight on to the Internet. I have heard that, for a fee, you can get details from the Record Office but you need to have details of names and addresses and possibly show that you are a descendant &/or that the people named are deceased or you have their consent if still alive because of privacy requirements. I haven't tried to get access to 1901 or later census records myself but perhaps someone else of the list has experience of this. Your best bet may be to try electoral records or post office or trade directories through the local record office/library etc. This may give you some likely names and addresses.Putting their names and the details you already have on the list may produce someone with more information. What names were you looking for? If you are in Scotland or can get to Edinburgh, I think all birth death and marriage records are available at the Record Office right up to the present day but you need to go there yourself, do a postal enquiry, or get someone else who is going there to look for you.
