    3. I am looking for Patrick MCAUSLAN(E) of Row who married Catherine EWING of Cardross. I think Patrick's parents were Joseph MCAUSLANE OF Tomavoulin and Jean WILSON of Blairnairn. They had both been married before. Patrick's first wife was Agnes MCMILLAN and they had a daughter Mary born July 1794. Jean's first husband was Peter MCFARLANE. Joseph McAuslane and Jean Wilson had at least three children: Jean born 18 Sep 1797; Robert born 19 Apr 1798 and Patrick born 13 Jan 1800. I have no proof that these people were the parents of my Patrick but am still trying to find some verification. Patrick and Catherine emigrated from Rutherglen, Lanarkshire to Ontario, Canada in about 1838 with one son Joseph born 4 March 1836. Would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in these families. Jean Broadfoot, Ottawa, Ontario.

    3. Its amazing to me that all our families in the 1850's were in the same small area. They must have known each other. They're all probably having a good laugh at us trying to find them all. My grandmother was Mary BUCHANAN daughter of John BUCHANAN and Mary DENNY Mary DENNY died before her daughter was married in 1883 in Renton to Robert MELVILLE son of William MELVILLE and Janet LIDDLE. Janet LIDDLE was also deceased at the time of the wedding. James LIDDLE was a witness to the young couples wedding. Mary Buchanan was listed as a Mill Hand and Robert Melville was an apprentice riviter. I'd really like to know more about them. Thanks Rosemary McLarty

    3. Gary, as my kin lived in Old Kilpatrick parish about the time as yours, I'll tell you that my grandpa worked for Singer Sewing Machine and also he and his boys worked on building the ships on the Clyde, or iin other words, working for John Brown....a going industry at that time. Perhaps your kin could have been involved with similar work. 1. Roll Call - McCALLUM, CUTHILL, CHALMERS, NIVEN, MacFARLANE, MacAU SLAN, ARROLL
    2. Lesley M Instone
    3. Hello all My Dunbartonshire interests are based around my McCALLUM family from Helensburgh (Row or Rhu parish) and earlier in Luss parish. They descend from Donald McCALLUM and wife Margaret MacFARLANE who had a large family mostly in Luss in the 1780s/1790s but with the youngest (Agnes )in 1808 in Row parish at somewhere called "Townhead of Stuck". Anyone know where this place is or was? Also looking for the location of a place in Luss parish which looked like "Coirechanagan/Coirecheanahan on the film of the parish register (1780s/1790s). Anyone know where this place is? Donald McCALLUM & Margaret MacFARLANE were living there when several of the older children were born. Children of this couple include: Duncan McCALLUM who married Christian CHALMERS in Row in 1840s - Christian was daughter of John CHALMERS and wife Margaret NIVEN of Roseneath - any information on this couple. They had at least one other child, Margaret CHALMERS who married Alexander McAUSLAN and had family in Row - one daughter married a McLACHLAN and had a farm in the 1890s near Shandon, Row parish.Very little in the records on this CHALMERS family apart from the marriage of the parents in Roseneath, and the later marriages of their daughters in Row. Has anyone come across them or know of any other children? Peter McCALLUM who married Christian McLEOD (daughter of Peter McLeod Tailor Adkinglas, parish of Lochgoilhead & Kilmorach) 1815 in Luss and had family there and in Helensburgh - Peter McCALLUM described in the OPR as tailor in Morlarach - anyone know where this place is likely to have been. Peter McCALLUM later had a drapery business in Helensburgh and a couple of his sons were also tailors/drapers. Does anyone have any information on this business. Parlan or Parlane McCALLUM - haven't found his birth records yet but from other information (family stories, death certificate etc) he is also a son of this couple - quite a large family in Helensburgh. Also looking for information on whether Donald McCALLUM and Margaret MacFARLANE of Luss etc are the same couple as the couple who were married in New Kilpatrick on 29 December 1780 and/or the same couple as the couple of these names who had a son Daniel baptised in New Kilpatrick. Donald McCALLUM, son of Duncan McCALLUM and Christian CHALMERS married Margaret CUTHILL, daughter of WILLIAM CUTHILL and Alison RUSSELL at Camus Eskan Farm in Cardross c1875 - one of Margaret CUTHILL's sisters (either ELLISON or Isobel) married another D McCALLUM some time after the 1891 census - any information on this couple? When Christian CHALMERS died c 1874, her death was registered by a cousin James CHALMERS of Helensburgh - I haven't been able to find a likely James CHALMERS on the census records so far (1871 or 1881) - has anyone come across him? Other names connected to this family through marriage to McCallums include ARROLL (Mary McCALLUM, daughter of either Peter or Parlan married an ARROLL) I also have a separate family of MacFARLANES/McFARLANES/McFARLANDS in Dumbarton parish c1770s/1780s with a daughter Martha marrying a John GREENHILL from Paisley in Dumbarton in the 1770s. They had a large family in Paisley.Any information on Martha and her parents/siblings? I have seen a number of census films, OPR for Luss, Row & Roseneath and have Ordnance Survey maps, both modern and reproductions of 19th century ones covering the Luss/Row area. 1. Sir William Molesworth - Ship
    2. Mike CALDER
    3. G'day, In answer to the plea of our list owner I am goaded into repeating this post regarding the ship that brought my GGGrandfather, William CALDER from Kirkintilloch to Australia. I do not know if there were others from Kirkintilloch or elsewhere in Dunbartonshire but the ship did sail from Glasgow and carried 273 passengers who I would guess were predominantly Scots. In my earlier post I had not discovered the fate of the vessel after the voyage. I have now solved that mystery and can say that this ship made a one way voyage with immigrants to Australia. I have now finished copying the text of an account of the voyage of the ship "Sir William Molesworth" from Glasgow to Melbourne - 13 Oct 1852 to 14 Mar 1853. which is a most interesting insight into life aboard such a ship in those days. The interesting thing about this ship is that it was "owned" by the passengers who I had originally believed had called themselves collectively the "Christian and Temperance Emigration Society of Scotland" The author of the account actually says"- "Perhaps I should have stated before now that the vessel belonged to the passengers who designated themselves the "Christian Temperance Emigration Association", and the management of affairs was conducted by a Committee out of their own number." Whether this practice of the passengers owning the ship occurred on other occasions is not known. In "Shipping Arrivals and Departures - Victorian Ports - Vol 2" by M A Syme, ISBN 0909434 32 8, she is noted as still being in Hobsons Bay on 02 October 1853, seven months after her arrival. In Lloyds Register of Shipping for 1854 she is still listed but she no longer has a port of registry. The following year the name does not appear. According to "Wrecks of Port Phillip" by Peter J, Williams and Roderick Serle, Maritime Historical Productions, Melbourne 1964, the ship was sold after arrival in Australia to Mr. A. W. Hill and H. A. Coffey, and soon after leased to a firm who carried on a ship repair and chandlers business at Williamstown. Some time in the 1860's she was hulked, and in 1870 a half interest was sold to Captain James Deane and two others who used the vessel as a coal hulk. It was while serving in this capacity that she caught fire at Williamstown on 8th October 1871 and was totally destroyed. Having now converted the diary into a Word document I will be happy to share with those interested. If any of you have ancestors who came to Australia on the ship. The passenger list is available on the Victorian PRO "Immigration to Victoria - British Ports 1852 - 1869 - Inward Passenger Lists" site) you will find it most interesting. http://www.cohsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/db/ship2.pl The following names occur in the Diary:- Allen, Brown, Craig, Crum, Cunningham, Currie, Daniel, Dodds, Gale, Glass, Glassford, Gordon, Graham, Innes, James, Jamieson, Johnstone, Jordan, Keith, Kennedy, Kerr, Kerr Johnstone, Lawson, Leckie, Low, Marshall, Martin, Martindale, Marton, Mathieson, McBain, McCallum, McCrae, McGavin, McKennory, McKenzie, McLennan, McNab, McPherson, McVicar, Miller, Millie, Moore, Morris, Morton, Mudie, Murray, Robertson, Sair, Scott, Service, Sinclair, Spedding, Stewart, Strachan, Sutherland, Valentine, Wallace, Watt, Wilson, Wylie, Young.
