    3. Hi Karen I have Elizabeth McCulloch of Kirkintilloch in my Reid line. She was married in 1839 to James Reid, they lived at Mill Hill Cottage near Dunblane for 50+ years. They had about 8 children (I left my file at work and I can't remember the exact number or names!), one of which was Alexander Reid who was my ggg grandfather. Could Elizabeth and Jean be sisters? 1. RE: Married Twice?
    2. Lesley M Instone
    3. Hi Jean Did you get the two dates and parishes from the IGI or OPR index or did you look at the films of the original parish registers? I have found that where there are dates in two parishes with the dates being within a week or so of each other, these dates refer to the banns not the marriage, although the later date may be the actual marriage date. Where bride and groom were from different parishes the banns would normally be called in both places. Some parishes would only record the banns, some would record the banns and note after the last banns entry the date and place of the marriage or in some cases that the marriage did not take place, and some parishes only recorded the marriages. You need to look at both parish registers to see what systems were in use in 1810 in each parish. When the IGI index was compiled from parish registers, the banns dates were often included as a marriage date which results in a number of couples seeming to have several marriage ceremonies. Your message reminds me that I must check the original Dumbarton parish and Paisley Middle Church registers for a pair of marriage index references in my family, John GREENHILL from Paisley and Martha McFARLAND from Dumbarton in the late 1700s. There seem to have been quite a few marriages between people from Dunbartonshire and people from the greater Glasgow/Paisley areas in Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire. 3. Hi I'm new to this list. My name is Jean I live in Sydney Australia, and I am researching CLARK/CLARK, DUNBAR in Dunbarton. I was also going to ask the question about couples marrying twice. I have Nicol CLARK married to Margaret DUNBAR on 8 December 1810 at Old Kilpatrick Dunbarton, and on 17 December 1810 Low Paisley, Renfrew. Maybe the two ceremonies were performed to keep both sides of the family happy. I'd love to know if this was common.
