Listers, this is what is available through the FHL: Records at the Family History Library The Family History Library has microfilm copies of civil birth, marriage, and death records for the years 1855 through 1875, 1881, and 1891. To find these records, look in the Locality Search of the Family History Library Catalog under SCOTLAND - CIVIL REGISTRATION. You can also find microfilm numbers by looking in the following register: Register of Births, Marriages, and Deaths of Scotland. Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Family History Library, 1987. (FHL book Reg 941 V2; fiche 6035516.) Birth and marriage records from 1855 to 1875 have been extracted and appear in the International Genealogical Index. Indexes to Civil Registration Records Indexes can help you find your ancestors' civil registration records. The Registrar General creates nationwide indexes after receiving the records from the local registrars. These indexes are arranged by year and give name, place of registration, and entry number. The Family History Library has microfilmed the indexes for the years 1855 to 1955. You can find them by looking in the Locality Search of the Family History Library Catalog under SCOTLAND - CIVIL REGISTRATION. When searching the indexes, you should be aware that: Marriage indexes for females (1855-64) are arranged alphabetically by maiden surname. The husband's surname appears in parentheses. Death indexes for females (1855-64) are arranged in alphabetical order under her married surname with her maiden surname in parentheses. After 1864, death indexes list women under both their maiden surnames and their married surnames. A "Mc" or "Mac" surname may be found in the indexes at the end of the M section. There is an additional index at the end of each yearly index called the Vide Addenda. This index lists names missed in the regular index. A cross-reference to the Vide Addenda will usually be found in the regular index. Some births, marriages, and deaths were registered late. These "neglected entries" cover the period from about 1820 to 1860 and were registered between 1860 and 1868. They are on one roll of microfilm (FHL film 103538). If you cannot find an index entry, consider the following strategies: Surnames are often found under unexpected spellings. Look for variations. Events are filed by the date registered, not the date occurred. For example, a birth on 20 December may have been registered in January of the following year. Indexes were hand-prepared and may contain copying errors and omissions. A person may have been registered under a different name than was used later in life. A woman's surname in the marriage index may be her surname by a previous marriage. Family information (particularly age at death) is often misleading. Persons with common names may be difficult to identify in the index. An illegitimate child may be registered under the mother's maiden name. Some children were registered as "male" or "female" when a name had not been selected at the time of registration. Not every person was registered. Hi eveyone, I`ve recently made a discovery in my family. I was beginning to think Walter Stirling didn`t excist. I`ve narrowed down his birth to 1819 Kirkintilloch and his death 1871-1881(not on the 81 census). How do you go about finding a death in these years? I also have LDS film #0103978 1871 census , Kirkintilloch. I`ll do my best to help anyone out who`s interested on Tues and Thurs night. Karen in freezing southern Ontario.
Hi listers....another list owner reminded her listers of this page and I hadn't read this in a long time myself....reminders about mailing list etiquette....it's worth reading through....not that there has been any problems on this list...but it's a page of just good reminders.. Thanks so much. Barbara Lewis http://www.primenet.com/~vez/neti.html _______________________________________________________ Site Design, Hosting, and E-Commerce at www.webpipe.net

Hi Listers I have been offline for a month, so thought I would re-post my DAVIE names, just in case I have missed a posting. I am looking for information on: James DAVIE, who had the occupation of Silversmith in Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland during the early 1800's. I have not been able to find his birth record (could be anywhere in Scotland) or any record of his death. He married Elizabeth HALLIDAY on 21 June 1816 in Greenock. She was 33 at time of this marriage (her second), so it is quite possible that it was James DAVIE's second marriage also. They had 2 sons: (1) James born 2 April 1819, Greenock, married Jessie TAYLOR in Rothesay on 25 September 1851 and (2) Samuel Ewing born 14 July 1824, Greenock, married Catherine CAMPBELL in Greenock on 1 January 1852. I have been unable to find out any information on James DAVIE - he is not mentioned in the Greenock Census for 1841 or 1851, although his wife, Elizabeth is listed as his widow in 1851. All I have is that he was a Silversmith and is mentioned in the Pigots Directory for 1815. It is possible that Thomas DAVIE, also a Silversmith (married Agnes Aitkin in Edinburgh in about 1780) is James' Father as they were both Silversmiths in Greenock but I have been unable to find anything on this gentleman either, it appears he moved to Greenock from Edinburgh in the late 1700's. Any information on James DAVIE or Thomas DAVIE would be most appreciated. Janelle Canberra, Australia aurora@dynamite.com.au Researching Davie, Halliday, Barr, Taylor, Menzies
I am seeking information concerning John Elton schoolmaster who married Elizabeth Arthur alias Smith in Cumbernauld in 1799. I would particularly like to know when and where he was born. Any help would be appreciated. John. Melbourne, Australia.
Thanks Barb, that would be great. Karen
Karen, I'm going to the library on Friday and will look it up for you, unless someone else that has the program does it first. Let me know. After submitting a request for information re William Charles HARVEY, I began having some garbled e-mail responses. Now that my e-mail appears to be back to normal - all the material (that at least two very generous people sent to me re the HARVEYs) has been lost. If you don't mind could you please 're-send'? Thank you. I have the following: William Charles HARVEY (b.c. 1910, the son of Charles HARVEY and Martha CAMPBELL) married in Jamestown,1936 Ellen MCKAY. William was (at the time of marriage) an engineer journeyman.
Hi everyone, Long time since we`ve seen some action. Does anybody have the 1881 census that they could do a look up for me.When I try these names at the FHC it always says to modify my search and I`ve done everything possible. I`m looking for John and Mary LEWSLEY. She would be abt. 24 b. Kirkintilloch. Any Lewsley will do. Also Patrick and Margaret (Curran) Dodds. Kirkintilloch I think. Thanks for any help. Hello Brian I have a William Simpson HARVEY (brother of my gggrandmother Isabella HARVEY) born 4 June 1829 in Glenshiel Ross-shire but don't know what happened to him after the 1841 census (when the family were in Fodderty. William was named after the factor his father Thomas HARVEY worked for in Glenshiel. Thomas HARVEY was born somewhere in Scotland (but not in Ross-shire), died some time between the 1841 and 1851 censuses and was married at least twice - to Magdalene THOMSON in June 1823 in Peebles parish, Peebles-shire, and to Isabella MacRAE in 1834 in Glenshiel. There were several William HARVEYs among the next generation of this HARVEY family both in Scotland and among the children of three of the sons who emigrated to New Zealand. If you Harveys have any connection to the Glenshiel/Kintail area, please contact me as this family seems to be the only Harvey family in that area 1820-1840. Thomas Harvey worked as a shepherd and may have been one of the lowland shepherds who went to the Highlands after the clearances when the sheep moved in. Apart from the three sons who went to NZ (Robert, James & John), his son George was also very mobile, moving from Ross-shire, to Portree & Snizort on Skye, to Inverchaolain, Dunoon & Kilmun in Argyll and finally (I think) to Tongue in Sutherland. Any Thomas HARVEY in your family, born about 1795 (give or take a few years as age estimated from 1841 census), who may have gone to Glenshiel as a shepherd around 1820? As this is a new request I am, on behalf of my cousin Patrick, trying to find the buriel place of his father John McAteer, a Miner born in 1893 in Kirkintilloch, John married Anne Murray (Belfast) they separated when Patrick was aged 9....Patrick would be most grateful for any help to enable to visit his fathers' grave. MMcClenagh
Hi Patrick Thanks,I'll keep checking,my problem is I haven't found Williams(my gr grandfather) birth or death record yet. He just appears in the 1871 marriage cert.and then disappears. He wasn't with his wife and children in the 1881 census, and in the 1891 census his wife declares herself a widow. There was a son born in 1885,so unless there was some hanky panky,he was still alive then.I even know his parents, maybe they were all born in Ireland, although my father told me that William was born in Dundee Thanks again Frank McGonigal
