    1. Browne or Brown
    2. Val Royal
    3. Hi Everyone This is my first request to the list and I am seeking the birth of my Grandfather. Altho the family are Irish and I have good contact with that branch I understand his parents moved and worked at the shipyards at CLYDEBANK, Dunbartonshire at which time he and perhaps other siblings were born. His name was JAMES BROWN although I understand the family at that time spelt it BROWNE and certainly that spelling is on the marriage certificate of his parents who were JOHN BROWNE and MARGARET BROWNE nee BLAIR His date of birth is FEBRUARY 27th 1870. His death certificate tells me born NORTH OF ENGLAND but declared on my mothers birth certificate as GLASGOW, SCOTLAND Siblings names who could have also been born at Clydebank were ROBERT JOHN, SAMUEL, THOMAS HENRY, and ELIZABETH, as I have the Irish info for the births of the rest of the family. My James Browne was brought up in Northern Ireland but must have spent some time in Glasgow as a young man as I have a photograph taken of him wearing a "Lodge Regalia" The Photographer was "Hampton Brothers" 2 WT Campbell Street, Glasgow. James came to New Zealand c before 1895, family history tells me he was a BOXER known as SMILEY. He married my Grandmother in January 1895 and I can track him from then. Any kind sole who can suggest where to start looking for his birth certificate would be most welcome. Thankyou Val rangval@xtra.co.nz

Not all the records are that way. I admit I did use shortcuts as it was late and I was tired.. but 9/3 and 9/6 were Sept 3 and Sept 6 as it appears on the record. Also the copy I have is really small (so I could fit all the info on the page) so it makes it harder to read. As for the minister.. nope it doesn't give that information. I type what I see in the entries.. I only can't type in what I can't read.. if I can sorta figure it out I'll try and guess but I'll note that as well. I've found that there is no standardization to the records, they are written in whatever format the recorder chose to use. Anyone that has any questions about it may email me. > > regards, > > Maureen Kuzyk > Looking for information on: O.C.H.I.L.T.R.E.E, M.c.C.r.i.g.h.t, G.r.e.g.o.r.y, B.i.s.h.o.p, M.c.I.n.t.y.r.e, L.e.n.n.o.x, G.o.r.d.o.n, T.u.r.n.e.r and L.e.i.t.h.

I don't know your name, no signature on your message. Thank you for offering the birth records from Row, Dunbarton. However, I would like to offer a suggestion. Writing the dates the way you have (above) doesn't make the information posted very clear, they were not written like that on the OPR films I have read. Can you post future entries exactly as they appear on the record? Requires more typing I know but it would help. Dates should be, DAY, month and year, preferably with the month spelled out and would say something like : born Third (or 3rd.) Septr. and baptized Sixth (or 6th) Septr. 1805. Sometimes they even say 'baptized by' ......... does it say who the minister was in 1805, in the entry or perhaps at the begining of the entries? All the little extra bits do make a difference. regards, Maureen Kuzyk

    1. America's Cup - "Shamrock" - Roseneath & Helensburgh
    2. Lesley M Instone
    3. My grandfather, Hugh Miller McCALLUM (born 1883 Helensburgh, son of Donald McCALLUM & Margaret CUTHILL), in his memoirs, mentioned that he and a couple of close friends one day rowed across from Helensburgh to Roseneath and had a look at a yacht, the "Shamrock" moored at Roseneath which either had been or was about to challenge for the America's Cup. Granddad said it was challenging for the "Lipton Cup" but I think he meant the yacht was owned by Sir ? Lipton and challenging for the America's Cup. As the America's Cup is being contested in Auckland NZ at present (between New Zealand and Italy), this reminded me that I have been meaning to narrow down the date when Granddad and his friends went over to Roseneath. (They got back to Helensburgh safely but it took them a bit longer than they thought it would). Does anyone on the list know when this yacht was moored at Roseneath or what year the "Shamrock" challenged for the Cup (it lost of course). I presume it would be somewhere around 1900, and that Granddad would have been in his late teens or perhaps early 20s. My Grandfather emigrated to NZ in 1911 after several years of ill-health, in the hope that the climate would be better for him (he lived into his 80s), so I would think that the rowing over to Roseneath would be some years earlier. Any ideas on the dates? Lesley Isntone Invercargill New Zealand

    3. I have been away from the list for awhile and now that I am back I am reposting my interests. I am looking for information on HIGGINS that have lived in and around the Dunbarton area. I also recently found out that my great grandmother's brother, William GRIEVE moved from Greenock, Renfrew to Row, Dumbarton. William GRIEVE was born 6 Dec 1848 in Greenock, Renfrew, Sct. He married Agnes Maitland GEMMILL (b. 13 May 1852 in Girvan, Ayr, Sct) in Jul 1871 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Sct. They had the following children: Mary Harvey GRIEVE (b. 11 Jan 1872 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Sct.) Thomas GRIEVE (b. 25 Mar 1873 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Sct.) Isabella GRIEVE (b. 20 Nov 1874 in Row, Dunbarton, Sct.) Agnes GRIEVE (b. 1877 in Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Sct.) Jane G. GRIEVE (b. 1878 in Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Sct.) Jemima G. GRIEVE (b. 1881 in Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Sct.) On the 1881 census the family is found living at 178 E. Princes St. Row, Dumbarton, Scotland. William GRIEVE is aged 31 and working as a Tinsmith. Anyone with connections or information on these families? TIA Here's hoping. Janet Tennent Kensington, Maryland USA

I have seen the OPR for Row some time ago and I think I noted all the McCALLUMs and CHALMERS but am not sure if I got the other ones as some of them are from collateral lines I did not find out about until later.
