    1. Surnames Intersts list--in subject line
    2. Barbara Lewis
    3. Listers, be SURE that you put "Surnames Interest List" or something like it on the subject line when you are submitting surnames for the new listing that I am making. (see below) ...I delete messages just like everyone else when I see surnames on the subject line that I'm not connected to, and I may have deleted someone already....I caught myself just now on a submission that listed the surnames on the subject line. Thank you for your great response....I'm almost caught up...not quite! Also, please let me know if I make any mistakes with your submissions. 1. (Torrance) ARMOURS
    2. Brian Damerell
    3. Good Evening from a new subscriber to the list, I am trying to make headway on the family of Robert ARMOUR and Catherine ARMOUR (nee ORR) who were both born in Glasgow. Robert was born c.1836 and Catherine in 1838-ish and they were both, apparently deaf and dumb. My wife is a member of this line and carries the name Torrance as a second forename, as do several other members of the name, both male and female. Both Robert and his wife were in Liverpool in 1881 and their occupation was described as "lay missionary". At that time they had eight children, the eldest being born in St Helens, Lancashire and the others all born in Liverpool. If anyone can help with any information on this family apart from the 1881 census returns I would be very grateful. Thanks in anticipation Brian Damerell from the Garden of England

    3. There was a huge influx of Irish immigrants into the west coast of Scotland throughout the late 1840's/ early 1850's as a result of the Irish potato famine. In Dunbartonshire, may were employed in the cotton mills, mines or on farms. Hope this helps, Gary Young (Clydebank). -----Original Message----- From: Rachael Diana <r_diana@earthlink.net> To: DUNBARTONSHIRE-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com <DUNBARTONSHIRE-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: 18 April 2000 13:49 Subject: Re: Immigration to Dumbarton from Ireland >Hi Gene, > >I noticed your message and thought maybe I could help. 3. Hi Gene, I noticed your message and thought maybe I could help. I'm certainly not an expert but I have been researching Dunbartonshire census records from 1841-1871, specifically in the parish of Row. There did appear to be many people listed in the census whose birthplace was Ireland. So I suspect many Irish immigrants did come to Dunbartonshire to work as farmers. There may certainly be a connection with "our" Blairs. Matthew C. Blair left Cumbernauld for Pennsylvania in 1869. The same year tht you have information on a Matthew Blair arriving in New York. Matthew C. Blair arrived, I think, in Castle Garden, New York. From there he traveled to Tioga County, Pennsylvania. I'll try to send you an email.

    3. Posted on: Shire of Dunbarton, Scotland Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Dunbarton?read=573 Surname: Blair, Liddell ------------------------- My great great grandfather was James Blair and came to Tioga County, PA from Cumbernauld, Scotland. His mother was Mary Liddell and married Matthew Blair on March 11, 1805. I'm not sure of the town they were married in, but Matthew's parents were from Inshinin, Scotland. Matthew Blair and Mary Liddell had the following children. Agnes b. 1/2/1806, Matthew b. 11/28/1807, Janet b. 5/12/1809, Jeanie b. 11/25/1810, Matthew (another)b. 5/9/1813, Mary b. 10/3/1815, James b. 3/25/1818, William b. 3/25/1820, Janet(another) b. 7/25/1822, Robert b. 1/24/1825, John b. 7/18/1827, Walter b. 9/29/183?. The only Blair that I can tie in to being around the Blossburg/Arnot area that is a part of this family is John who was born in 1827. He is shown in the alien status report to have arrived in New York in 1871 and renounced the Queen in 1874 at the age of 47. Also on that alien status report is a Matthew Blair age 30 arrived in New York in 1869 from Scotland. Matthew Blair's father was also named Matthew and married twice. The first time to Janet Blackwood and they had the one son Matthew. They were married in Inschinin, Scotland on 3/5/1784. He married a second time to Mary Blackwood (may have been a sister - I don't know) and they had 8 additional children. Unfortunately I have very little information on these children as far as their children are concerned. If you need any additional information, please feel free to email me. The dates you have given for the date of birth do not add up with what I know, but since they all came to the same area in the PA and came from the same area in Scotland there is a good chance that they are connected. I know that my great grandfather was a miner and was not thrilled with life in the US.
