Need to find descendants of Mr Dick, a butcher who lived at 117 Townhead and a Dr William Buchan Armstrong. My great Grandmother Eliz Cochrane and her husband Arch Robertson lived in Kirkintilloch between 1884 and 1914. Arch died in 1900 and Eliz married a Robert McEwan, then they emigrated to Indiana. My grandfather also Archie emigrated I believe in 1905, possibly on the Athenic. Could anyone tell me if that ship sailed from Glasgow?
My name is Alan PAUL and I live in Victoria Australia. I an researching my family tree and have in one of my Scottish Ancestors I have COWDEN as a middle name. Her name is Agnes COWDEN McKEAN born abt 1827 in Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland. Her parents were Alexander McKEAN and Winifred (Unity) PATERSON. Eric, if you have the Christening for Elizabeth, you won't find the birth record unless a family has record of it...sometimes they will list the birth in the Christening, but not usually. Assuming that you have checked the OPR records which are found in all the Family History Centers....Elizabeth's sibling should be there also, and if they aren't, then they were either not recorded, or the family belonged to a non-conformist church.... However, I had a harder time finding my Scottish children born in the same place....especially in the urban areas....my families moved all over the place....my English family stayed put and I usually found the children born (Christened) in the same parish. So youmay have to look in different parishes for the birth of Elizabeth's siblings......or if they are in the OPR, it may be hard to identify them if they were Christened in different parishes..... If you can get into the actual parish records/Christenings, it may possibly tell where the parents are "of" (from), but not usually....that info is more likely to be found in their marriage record.........and that is where you look for David and Flora, unless you can find them in the OPR records. Campbells are very hard to tell because the name is so common. Just some ideas..... Barbara Lewis ----- Original Message ----- From: Erik W. I recently traced my first set of ancestors back to the "old country". I recently came across the christening record for my grt-grt grandmother Elisabeth Houston. It occured 16 Aug. 1846 in Cumbernauld, Dunbarton, Scotland. Since this is the first sold location to Scotland I hoped I might find some help here in obtaining more information. Her parents were listed as David Houston and Flora Campbell. This is all I really know. If any one has any ideas about where I should look for birth records for Elisabeth, any siblings, and information on David and Flora, please let me know. The miracle of course is that somebody already has all this information and needed a line of decandents for Elisabeth, which I have a partial list at the moment. Thanks for your time, I know this is rather lengthy, and for your help. Erik W. McLaren
Mary Thank you for looking into my David KERRs. In another response someone was asking me the accessibility of the Lachine Rapids in 1867. I'm sure they must have been if Kingston was listed as a port of disembarkment. I'm not too concerned with the Ontario ports as my David KERR and Catherine DUNCAN family left ship at the Quebec port (the name escapes me). I believe the children must have departed the family in Quebec. Just today I read there was a settlement of Scots in Compton County. That is where my grgrandparents first settled when they arrived in Quebec. I have an address for the Eastern Townships Research Centre in Lennoxville which I will visit when I'm there this summer. Thanks again for your interest. Regards Roberta KERR
