I am having great difficulty in finding my ggg grandparents, especially Euphemia (nee Stewart). William, born about 1832, was from Yorkshire, but it's unclear whether Euphemia, born somewhere between 1833 and 1838, was from Newcastle or from Scotland. She had an older brother, Duncan Stewart, born about 1825, in Scotland. I have not been able to find marriage or birth registrations, although I have found information in the 1881 census (Sunderland, Co. Durham) and on the IGI. William and Euphemia had the following children: Robert born 10 May, 1855, in Hamilton, Lanarkshire (I have his birth registration but it is quite confusing) Ann, born 24 August, 1857, in Hamilton, Lanarkshire Alexander, born 13 November, 1860, in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire Sarah, born 4 April, 1862, in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire Francis, born about 1868 in Sunderland, Co. Durham William, born about 1870, in Sunderland, Co. Durham It's possible, but unlikely I think, that Ann and Alexander were the children of a different William and Euphemia Rooks, but I am certain of all of the other children, and I know that there was at least one earlier child. It is intriguing to me that the IGI has another Alexander, born to William Rooks and Janet McKirdy on 16 March, 1861, in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire. Could this be the same William Rooks, I wonder. I would appreciate it very much if someone could look up the family in the 1861 census for Bonhill and Cambustnethan, if this isn't too much of a chore. Otherwise, if anyone could throw any light on this at all, I'd be delighted. Vivienne Simmons Toronto, Canada

Wow, what a response. Many thanks to you all who replied with useful comments and observations. My money is now back in my pocket until I have digested your views. PAF looks to be worth a try and I shall give it a go. Meanwhile I shall peruse the shelves of the Electronic Boutique and the pages of some of the Family tree mags. regards Brian J Damerell Gillingham Kent
Hello Everyone I am considering a new package for collating my family tree information and I would value your advice. At present I am using a cheap and cheerful program from GSP and I now find it a bit inflexible when trying to change or, especially, delete existing data. I have seen the Family Tree Maker set, with 15 CD's for £45.95 in Chatham and I wondered if any of you have any comments on it. On the back of the box it appears that the data is mostly gleaned from American sources, but then so is the IGI etc. I hope someone can help me as it is quite a major outlay for a bus driver! Hello List Can anyone out there help me please? I have for a long time been trying to locate the death of an ancestor. I found that she died in Lenzie and is buried in Kirkuntilloch Cemetery. I believe though that she has no gravestone. Would it be possible for some kind soul to do a lookup for me in the Parish Register. I would like to find the exact date of death for Janet CAIRNIE nee McNEIL d.1922 The informant would have been her sister Agnes HENDERSON nee CAIRNIE. With this information I will then be able to apply for her certificate and find out who her parents were. Thank You Anita in Redditch, Worcestershire

I have been told that my Grandfather's Cousin was Bernard KELLY. And he may have been the headmaster at one time of Clydebank High School. (?) Can anyone verify this? Does anyone remember Bernard KELLY? Debbie Derrick - B.C.
Hi Everyone, Does anyone know where I might be able to find Police records covering the 1920's for Edinburgh? Looking for any information on a fellow called James WILLIAMSON. He was apparently originally from Fife, but served with the Edinburgh police force. He also had family links in Duntocher. Debbie Derrick - B.C.
Hi Everyone, A long shot... I know. But here's hoping! I'm searching for a copy of a class photograph taken in 1929 of the First Year class at St. Mary's, Duntocher. My Mother is in the photo - age 5. Mum's copy of the picture was lost in the blitz, and she has always hoped that some day she might be able to find another. Is there any chance that the school would have kept copies? Or perhaps another classmate might still have a copy? Any help would be most appreciated. Many thanks, Debbie Derrick - B.C.

I am looking for information on Finlay McMartin and Helen Martin who were the parents of my g-grandfather Alexander Robert McMartin (born in 1835 in Dumbarton). I have been unable to find Finlay and Helen ever actually living with their children: Helen, Mary, Finlay, Barbara Marion, Alexander Robert and Peter. To explain: In the 1841 Census the children Mary, Finlay, Barbara and Alexander were living in Church Street Dumbarton with Duncan and Catherine McArthur who were born in Argyleshire and were aunt and uncle to the children. In the 1851 Census Alexander was again living with the McArthurs at 139 Castle St. Barbara was living with Flora McInnes (who was also from Argyleshire) somewhere in Castle St, West Bridgend. So, where were Finlay and Helen while their children were growing up and where do I start looking? On 2 of Alexander's marriage certificates (he married 3 times) he describes his father as farmer and landholder. On his death certificate his father was listed as Army Officer. It has been suggested that perhaps they had both died, or perhaps the mother died and the father was in the Army. I have also been unable to find death details for either parent. Without an Army Regiment I think I'm also sunk. Any advice as to how to proceed would be most appreciated.
