Tori, if you can find your family in one of the 1851-1891 censuses, it will tell you where they were born. Listers, this message is from Liz (Druid Princess) who has been helping folks on the Lanark list. She has info for our Dunbartonshire listers also.....(do not reply to author or it will return to Barbara Lewis...write to Liz directly--she is not on the Dunbartonshire mailing list) I have downloaded the 2% of the 1851 Census that's online for Dumbartonshire and made Excel files, no more of those /// that makes it difficult to read. I have made both index and extract files for the following: Bonhill Dumbarton Barracks Helensburgh Prison Kirkintilloch Jail If anyone would prefer the files in MS Word format I can convert them, however the Word files will be zipped as they are much larger than the Excel files. I'm using Excel 2000, I can reformat the Excel files to any earlier version required, just let me know which version of Excel you need. Any member who would like copies of the above mentioned files is welcome to have them, my address is: Liz@empirenet.com Slainte! All the church records of out Clydebank will be found under the parishes, mostly Old Kilpatrick. Evidently there are no books or microfilms that deal with just the town of Clydebank. There are other publications out there about Clydebank...I have one myself: "The History of Clydebank", but the LDS does not have copies of these in book form or microfilm. Again, church records are found under the parish names. By the way, when looking up Dunbartonshire parish records in the LDS Library catelog, you have to type in "Dumbarton" rather than Dunbartonshire. Listers...I picked up this info from "Anne" on the Lanark list and want to share it...many of you, like me, and not finding your kin in the "Scottish Records" or GRO or "Scots Origins"...please read this: "The GRO (General Register Office) holds only the parish registers of the Church of Scotland, and these are all indexed (barring errors) on Scots Origins. There are extant registers from other churches, but these are held by the Scottish Record Office (SRO), not by the General Register Office. The Scottish Record Office is now known as the National Archives of Scotland (NAS), and they live in a different building from the GRO (next door, but still a separate building). These other churches' registers are not generally indexed and they are not included in Scots Origins. Only those that have been INDEXED are accessible from New Register House", but he is incorrect in saying that not all the OPRs held by the GRO are indexed on Scots Origins, since the ones which are not indexed are not held by the GRO but by the SRO/NAS. Incidentally all those registers indexed on Scots Origins can also be consulted on microfilm at FHCs as well as in New Register House (where the GRO lives). I hope that this will clarify the matter!" (I know now that to find those that were not of the Church of Scotland, I will have to visit the "Old Register House" or National Archives, next door to the New Register House, when I go to Scotland next. I should have done that last visit and didn't know this.)
