It has been suggested that "Dunnock" was derived from "Donnachie." An elderly cousin, since deceased, visited Scotland in the mid 1930s and found the family "on the banks of the River Clyde." Unfortunately, she left no documentation. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Will be glad to furnish information on John and descendants to other Donnachie researchers.

    3. Hello.. I am writing this here because I am thinking there are people from the U.K. reading here.. I recently have obtained some papers from the GRO in both Scotland and England. I have my documetation in sheet protectors in a 3 ring binder.. HOWEVER.. the certificates are a little bit longer than the U.S. documents and they stick out the top of the sheet protector just a little bit. I don't want to cut the certificates, or fold them; so is there a way to obtain sheet protectors that would accomodate these pages?? Thanks in advance T. 3. HI everyone, I recently printed out some births from a FHC film. These are all from Kirky. Some say possibly where the father was from? but I can`t read the writing and am unfamiliar with the words. SHIRVA? MIDDLE MOOR? Also a marriage from Kirky says the were married in Glasgow. Were their Banns read in Kirky and they married in Glasgow? Regarding the Civil registrations, are all the names on one index film to look at first or are they on individual films for each year? Should I look at index`s first or just go right to it? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help clear these things up for me. Karen

    3. Greetings to the list! I am new to this list, and my list of surnames for Dunbartonshire is just the one name: DONNACHIE. My immigrant ancestor was John DUNNUCK. He left London in 1737, arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in the American colonies after the usual wretched trip. Family legend is quite firm about Scotland being his home county; he lived "on the banks of the River Clyde." DONNACHIE is the only Scottish name I have found that comes close to DUNNUCK/DUNNICK/DUNNOCK, the variations in the USA. A cousin traveled to Scotland in the late 1930's, reportedly found the ancestral home with the family tree showing John as a broken-off twig, on the banks of the River Clyde. Can anyone help? 2. Alan Cairnie
    3. I have been doing a study of the ancestors of John CAIRNIE of Largs, Ayrshire, the first president of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. He was born in New Kilpatrrick, Dunbartonshire, in 1769, third son of Neil CARNIE and Mary SHIELS. As a teenager he took up curling at Denny. There was another family of CARNIEs in the same parish at the same time headed by Thomas CARNIE and Elizabeth MALCOLM. I know they are connected because John had three of the grandaughters of Thomas and Elizabeth in his care at Largs later on. I cannot find any earlier trace of Neil and Thomas CARNIE. Can anyone shed any light on this family? Alan Cairnie Perth, Ontario

    3. Through the Genuki site I have found a good history of the 21st Scots Fusiliers of Foot but am not absolutely sure that a battalion was based at Dumbarton. I am interested in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Is there anyone on the list who knows which regiment was based at the Dumbarton barracks at that time in history or could confirm that it was the 21st Scots Fusiliers of Foot? Thanks. Dwina.

My question is did an illegitimate birth always > mean what it usually does-an out of wedlock birth? Yes. If the parents married after the birth there would be a note......Corrected Entry.... inserted into the the left margin of the childs b. cert. at a later date, which you would see on the cert. you have. > Or if perhaps the father died during his wife's pregnancy, would the > birth still be listed as illegitimate-even if they were legally > married? No. The b. cert. would say the child was the.... dau of the 'deceased' John Smith > I know that in the 1861 census the wife is listed as widowed so maybe > her husband died while she was pregnant. I am trying to get the death > certificate of the husband. Ah, the census, I think you are likely to get more correct informtion in a small place, village etc. where the enumerator was the local school teacher or such and would know the residents. In larger places people could say whatever they liked and it might not be checked. The 'widow' might also have married someone else between 1858 and 1861 who died before the census. Have you looked for a marriage, silly question, you probably have! A marriage for any 'Mary Smith' (hope that wasn't her name or you will have to plough through a lot of certs) in a likely place? Tried all kinds of different spellings of the names and the two names in places you might not expect to find the marriage etc? Marriage could have been at the home of a favourite relation who lived in a diff. town or village. The death cert. of a husband (or wife) who died from 1856 to abt 1860 would say 'married' but no name of the wife (husband) would be on the cert. so that is not likely to help you, unless he died at the place the widow was living in 1861 and you could tie in that address with the census. Or, if one of the widows relations, a brother, sister, her father, cousin etc. signed the death cert. and you are pretty sure of the family relationship. If you do find one, it will give the burial place of the deceased. Hope this gives you some ideas, regards, Maureen Kuzyk

    3. Hello, I have a question and was wondering if someone had any insights. I obtained a birth certificate from 1858. The child is listed as illegitimate and only the mother's name appears-the child also has the mother's surname. My question is did an illegitimate birth always mean what it usually does-an out of wedlock birth? Or if perhaps the father died during his wife's pregnancy, would the birth still be listed as illegitimate-even if they were legally married? I know that in the 1861 census the wife is listed as widowed so maybe her husband died while she was pregnant. I am trying to get the death certificate of the husband. Meanwhile, if anyone has any clues about this, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
