Hi My GGGrandfather was ANDREW TAIT bn 1827 in Kirkintilloch; later married in Barony to a CHRISTINA KILPATRICK in on 16 May 1852 I have looked at the Society index to 1851 census but could not see him in Glasgow under either TAIT or TATE I wonder if SKS has access to indexes or the census to check for him in either 1841 when according to his 1861 entry he would have been 14 yrs. or at 24yrs probably at Barony but could still be Kirkintilloch as was single at the time of the census The parents named COULD have been JAMES TAIT and CATHERINE MACINTOSH but this is only a chance Ideas on tracking him down further appreciated since Scotland's People system shows no trace for my brick wall TIA Mike Tait
Dear Listers: My GGUncle, NEIL JAMES MCINTYRE was born in 1864 in KIRKINTILLOCH at a place called "DAUM MAINS". I think it was an estate or a farm somewhere around KIRKINTILLOCH as Neil's father, ARCHIBALD MCINTYRE was listed as a farm labourer on the birth entry. If anyone on the list can give me information as to what "DAUM MAINS" was and where it was located in reference to the actual town of KIRKINTILLOCH (North-South-East or West), I would greatly appreciate it. Hi Shirley, While I've been searching for Adam and John Turnbull, I purchased a 1861 Dunbartonshire census from the ScotlandsPeople website hoping it might be my ggrandfather's, John Turnbull's family but it was not. I think it might be a connection for you. There is a Robert head of the family who is 47 and a wife Jane (not Jean but close). They have a son Archibald, 13 which would be 1847 and another son George listed as 6 (1854). Other siblings include Mary, John and James. Robert worked as a Calico printer. Probably the same place my ggrandfather and family worked. I have found it interesting reading about the Calico printing done at that time. It must have been one of the main industries of that area. You might find marriage and birth certificates there to help you be sure of the connection. I thought it was my gggrandfather for a while until I found a marriage certificate for John Turnbull where his father's name was Adam and his mother's name was Mary (Turnbull maiden name too). It is wonderful they did so much detail on the marriage information. Cheers Jean Jean Day Victoria B.C.
My ggg grandparents Robert TURNBULL and Jean MACLAREN married 18 Jun 1843 Cardross, Dunbarton, Scotland. My gg grandfather Archibald TURNBULL son of the above, married Ellen Jane Parker in Scots Church, Sydney New South Wales Australia on 12 Nov 1877. On this marriage certificate it records his birth place as Glasgow, Scotland. On his Victorian death certificate his birth place is recorded as Dunbarton, Scotland and records his length of time in Victoria, Australia as 35 years. I have not been able to locate Archibald's birth, the only information I have is the marriage for his parents from the IGI and the christening of a brother George TURNBULL chr 21 Jan 1854, Cardross, Dunbarton, Scotland (the same district as his parents marriage.) I have no further information on Robert and Jean TURNBULL and would appreciate any information on them and any siblings of Archibald and George, as Robert and Jean were married 1843 and my only finds are a tentative birth date 1852 for Archibald and a chr date 1854 for George (nine years after the marriage). Any help regarding this family would be most appreciated. Shirley Smith [email protected] Maitland District Lower Hunter Valley New South Wales, Australia

It was a large mansion [GB Grid Ref NS 350 774] a 1/2 km [1ml] up the Carman Road which runs between Cardross and the Vale of Leven. The owner fl. 1870 was J M Martin Esq. Hi Everyone, I'm fairly new to this group which I'm enjoying and looking for connections. When my mother's dad visited Scotland he took photos of my grandmother's family's and his family's grave stones. Those old photos have been a great start off point for looking up what I have found. I was wondering if anyone knows what grave site in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, Bonhill these photos might have been taken? My gg's were John Turnbull and Janet Taylor and I found that their parents were Adam Turnbull and Mary Turnbull ( that was her maiden name too), John Taylor and Agnes Graham. On my grandmother's side the gg's are Alexander Graham and Jeanie A. Sharp with the parents Alexander Graham and Grace Milligan m. 1840. gg parents, George Sharp and Margaret Cullen.. found census for both these families so that was great but haven't been able to find information beyond these families yet or a census with Adam and Mary Turnbull. Any information or connections would be most gratefully appreciated. Cheers, Jean Day Victoria, B.C.
