    1. Y-DNA Genealogical Study - Trail/Traill Surname
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Trail, Traill, Trale, Treyl (and other spellings) Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WeC.2ACI/1336 Message Board Post: REMINDER & INVITATION - The Trail/Traill/Treyl/Trale (etc.) Y-DNA genealogical study is ongoing! We need as many participants as possible in order to establish clear lines of descendancy and migration patterns of the family. Participants must be males with the surname Trail (or any variant spelling), because the study is based on transmission of the Y-chromosome from father to son. We are seeking men with any form of the surname, from any part of the world, especially the United States, Scotland, and Ireland. Migrations of Traills (mostly with the double-L spelling) are known in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies (Barbados, Jamaica, etc.), as well. All are welcome to join! To learn more or to join the study, go to http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=F60021 . If you want to join the study, please select a test of at least 25 markers -- the more markers, the better. Fewer than 25 will not yield useful results for the purposes of the study.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WeC.2ACI/1335 Message Board Post: Familytreesonline.co.uk - Newsletter Issue 4 1/6/2006 Hi Welcome to the monthly newsletter! This month has been pretty much Cornish oriented as demanded by you the users of this site, thanks for the feedback! There are a few other bits and pieces in here too, but more of that later. I’ve also been kept quite busy with my responsibilities as an Online Parish Clerk. I’ve neglected my transcriptions a bit getting this site up and running, so I went back to do a bit this month, in case anyone was wondering why I hadn’t added to the site for a couple weeks J. If anybody has had any interest in the Parish of Sithney, Cornwall, then look out soon for some new additions to that site. Enough with the waffling! Updates Well this month, as mentioned previously, has been mainly devoted to Cornwall, but not entirely……. Firstly we’ll start with one of the big guns of Cornish ancestry that has sprung up in recent years. The Cornwall Online Census Project (COCP) was started by the same people that started up the OPC scheme, and is very similar, but with the obvious exception that they deal with all parishes in Cornwall, and just the census returns at that. It has recently undergone a number of changes, the main one is that a search engine facility is now up and running, making it incredibly easy to find those elusive ancestors. Its still a work in progress, with the 1871 & 1881 census returns being undertaken, and the 1901 census is in the pipeline. This is one of the essential sites for finding you’re Cornish roots. Another Society has submitted for listing. The Cornish Forefathers Society has a site where you can buy all manner of transcriptions and is also chock full of links, well worth a visit. An interesting little site has also crossed my path this month. If you have found a lline of ancestry that disappears into thin air, have you ever thought that they may have gone to South America? A little known site that covers these people can now be found on my site, I found a number of odd cousins after a few minutes of searching. Also in the Cornish vein are a mining index site, some 16th century wills and also sites pertaining to the parishes of St Erth and Illogan. I did digress a bit as a few sites crossed my path. A brilliant site that finds graves for you - you can even look up the rich and famous! Also to be found this month are genealogy sites covering the Counties of Houghton & Keweenaw in Michigan, A wills exchange site which is useful and a new project specialising in Pennsylvanian ancestry. There is also a Canadian census site, and a site put together by a lady researching her own ancestry, which takes us from several Cornish parishes, to Pennsylvania again and then some. A good variety that I hope you can all find some use for. By no means have I added all the Cornish sites out there, but more will be coming soon. Coming this month..... I’m blowed if I know what I’m adding this month! I’ve had a real variety of stuff arriving, including a massive file containing links to New Zealand sites and loads more. I think I even got some links for Polish ancestry, anyone from Poland?? Thanks this month go to.... Blanche Charles For submitting the NZ stuff as mentioned above - it’ll keep me busy for months, love it!! Looking forward to working with you in the next month regards Damien

    3. Hi I am seeking information about James McKay born Dumbarton 1828 - parents John McKay and Mary Webster. He had six siblings all born Dumbarton - John 1818, Janet 1820, Mary Ann 1823, Christian 1825, Isabella 1830 and Elizabeth 1833. James worked as a baker though he also appears on some records as a labourer.I am specifically seeking the name of James' wife and two children. He was listed as unmarried in the 1851 census and was married with two children by the time he was transported to Western Australia in 1855 for the crime of robbery/assault - this crime took place in Edinburg. While I am particularily interested in James any iformation about the other family members would be much appreciated. Thank you Zoe

I thought there was a Agnes Lang, but what I have is the following, Catherine Lang (my ggrandmother) was the daughter of James Lang and Margaret Bain. James parents were James Lang and Clementina Young. His brothers and sisters were Grizel, Marion, Margaret and John. His father James (Clementina) was the son of Robert Lang and Marion Brock who married in 1757 in Old Kilpatrick. Their children were Robert, James, James Anne, George and Marion. I believe your Agnes was the sister of Robert Lang. Their ages would have been close and I think most of the Langs were there for awhile. I am going to order in the 1841 census again and check it out. I still didn't find the disc for my British Vital Index. Have you looked on the mormon church website? I got in touch with another Lang and I'll e-mail her again and see if she knows something. Take care Jean

Your mother is not the daughter of Clayton Richmond Sands (you do not have his name correct). I am one of his legal daughters from his only marriage and very much regret seeing this myth being perpetuated even on a reputable website. I have the only book done on our Sands family. I have reported this abuse to the site and would hope you will cease to spread this scurrilous rumour here or in any other form.

I happened to be surfing and came across my father's name (Richmond Clayton Sands). I am surprised to see that you had a reply from a Beth Cheverfils claiming to be the daughter of Clayton Richmond Sands (sic). This is just to let you know that any info received from the latter is wrong. She is not the daughter of my father and this is a long-standing untruth being spread. I am letting the message aboard know of this abuse. Regretfully, my father's family is not connected to your request. I have his family tree going back to the 1700's in Scotland and there is no connection to your request. Sorry for not being of any help other than to let you know you were misled.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McCauley& Buchanan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WeC.2ACI/1334 Message Board Post: I am seeking information on the following Henry M’Cauly (late 1600’s and early 1700’s), Rev. John M’Cauley (late 1600’s and early 1700’s), and James Jonathan Mccally (1746-1810)---my known Scottish McCauley ancestors. If you could assist in any way in providing additional background and details this would be most appreciated. I can be reached by e-mail at [email protected] or [email protected] David Potts My knowledge of this Scottish branch of my family is as follows: The patriarch of our branch of the M’Cauly Clan as is Henry M’Cauly (one record is spelled Henri M’Cauly, during this time Scotland was tied closer to France than to England). At this time there are no official records in Scotland. The only records are the parish records written by the church ministers. There are reports of two records of Henry, the first says that he was a merchant in Glasgow, Scotland. The second record says he is the father of Reverend John M’Cauly, a minister in Dunbartonshire. John being a good minister is reported to have kept good parish records of his family, but to which I do not have access. John’s wife was Katherine Buchanan of the Buchanan Clan’s territory, which is north and each of Loch Lommand. The next record that was reported to be found from John is in the Orkneys Islands (off the north east coast of Scotland) to which John received an assignment as a minister. John and Katherine have four children that we know of Alexander, John, James and Isobel. James is born during this period of time. James is my ancestor. I have the following information on James which may be of help. James Jonathan Mccally (McCauley) (McAuley) Born: 18 Apr 1746 Shire, Sterling Clackman, [county], Scotland Died: 10 Sep 1810 [city], Lewis, VA, USA The next record that was reported to be found is at Carncross, Scotland, saying that James is going to Virginia in North America to become a merchant. Alexander and John would soon follow. The last record on the family was found in Scotland is in Sterlingshire and tells of Isobel’s marriage to Alexander Monarch. James is next found in Norfolk, Virginia as Captain of a merchant ship that sails to Central and South America. During this period if you were a Captain of a merchant vessel you were automatically a Captain in the British Navy. There are records to indicate that the British Army seized two shiploads of mahogany lumber and James applies to the British Government for reimbursement. There is no indication that he ever received any compensation. James has his ship, the Elizabeth, seized by the Virginia Militia. The only information about the ship is it is listed as a fast sailing ship. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, James joins the Queen’s Loyal Virginia Regiment as a surgeon. The Queen’s Rangers soon absorb this unit. He is taken prisoner at least twice and maybe three times. There is one record of a British prisoner of war performing surgery for General Marion Francis. He is listed as Doctor James McCally. This can not be proven to be our James. James’ wife is Elizabeth Watson. Nothing is known of Elizabeth at this time. They have seven children, William, Polly who marries a Duncanson and later a man named Porter, James Jr. who marries Penelope Williams, Rebecca who marries William Bennett, Susannah who marries at least 3 times, Henry who will discuss later and Jonathan. At the end of the war James and his family moves from the coast to Pendleton County, Virginia , (USA) (now West Virginia, USA). From there his family moves to Harrison County (VA/WV) with his daughter, Rebecca, and her family. Here James dies on September 17, 1810. His wife Catherine moves to Clarksburg (VA/WV)where her son, James Jr., lives.
