This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McAdam/Crafourd Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WeC.2ACI/1342 Message Board Post: Good morning. I'm new to the list and the search in Scotland. I'm a decendant of Andrew and Ann McAdam who are buried in the Roseneath Old Church yard. Their stone reads: In Memory of Andrew McAdam late in Cursenogh who died May 17 1789 aged 77 years also Ann Crafourd his spouse who died May 18, 1807-they are plot #152. From information I have Andrew and Ann had 11 children, their son Andrew came to the New York in 1781 on a ship he and Andrew Sr's brother James called "The Dalosa". The brother left in Scotland Duncan McAdams is my link to this family-he had a twin brother Dugald. Other siblings are Janet- the oldest, William (who came to NY with Andrew Jr.) John, James, George, Robert, Grace and Patrick (the youngest). I believe John also came to NY with Andrew jr. I am trying to find traces of Duncan. He eventually came to NY was married 3 times and had 21 children! The question most foward on our minds is is this Duncan our GG-grandfather or did he have a son Duncan? The dates for Duncan son of Andrew and Ann would make him too old for the Duncan here in NY-who's birth we are guessing to be around 1800. In the book being written the Duncan who is son of Andrew and Ann was old enough to help with responsibilites with the running of the family business when his brothers left for NY in 1781. My other question is the Crafourd family. In the book it's spelled Crawford, having seen the picture of the headstone the mis-spelling is why we can't find anything. Does anyone know of this family? My Aunt remembers her mother telling her of a solicitor from Scotland coming to see her father and telling him he needed to come home and claim his lands (apparently a large home and property) he refused to leave NY and let it go to who ever was next. Would there be records of such matters still around. Here in NY we're subject to the clerk of the time and how good of a record keeper he was-which often was good at all! I'd like to find out where and what the house looked like to add to the history album. Any help would be greatly appreciated, research from across an ocean is a bit challenging! Thank you..... Vesti

My Uncle Peter Mitchell Robbie Campbell was born at this address on March 29, 1915. You won't find New Monkland on a modern map. It is the name of a parish which consists mainly of the town of Airdrie, but also a multitude of smaller villages, such as Glenmavis, Greengairs and Rigghead. The northern boundary of New Monkland parish is the southern boundary of Cumbernauld parish. I'm 44 year old and spent the first half of my life in Airdrie and the second (married) half in Cumbernauld.
Interesting. I have an Elizabeth PARK, b ca 1822, and my new found cousin - who lives in East Kilbride - and I have been pursuing her into Ireland though we dont know where. We had thought our CHESTERS family into which Elizabeth PARK married was firmly ancestralised d;^) in Scotland. Can anyone throw any light on this? It seems that PARK young ladies might have been in service. Here is the information I have relating to the Youngs here. Andrew Young born: March or April 1780 Scotland married Mary (?) born: 1805 Scotland children: Hugh Young b: March 1827 Scotland John Young b: 1831 or 1836 Scotland Agnes Young b: 1832 Scotland Margaret Young b: 1833 - 1834 Scotland The family then set sail for Canada around the time of 1836-1838 since I have a record of the first child born in Canada birth Feb.1839 in New Brunswick Canada. There were three more born here in Canada. Along side of these stones at the cemetery I found the names of William Young and Thomas Young but with only information regarding the death no information to who they were. I am guess that if they are related then they are brothers, cousin or nephew to Andrew and were already here in Canada or came with Andrew and his family. Or sons from a first marriage since Andrew is a lot older then wife Mary. Does any of this sound like a part of your family tree? if so then please email and I will share all information about the family here in Canada. Canadian Girl

I would appreciate some help re the names for OLDKILPATRICK.in the census records 1841 -1901 Can anyone explain what names were used in the various census returns which would apply to people born in places of these names Oldkilpatrick of Oldkilpatrick Mains mains of Colquhoun in Milton In Milton of Colquhoun Dumbarton Dunbartonshire Off Luss Camstradden. Glasgow birth 1784. I am wanting to find records initially for family born 1746, who would be the earliest possible individuals, to be recorded in 1841 census.I am using a life span for the odd one of 95 yrs, rather optirmistically With no local knowledge I do not know which to use in entries for census searches at various dates or if the various names are all areas of the same larger place. There are so many WILLIAMSONS and COLQUHOUNS it would seem important to know what information from Birth and marriage records are significant at specific dates. Iam really stuck at the moment even when trying to use Scotland's People as I don't know 'where ' the people might be living . If anyone can tell me anything or indicate a source of information it would be really helpful. Kind regards, Sue H
