To clarify my purpose, it is that we here in the UK, Scotland, England and Wales and Northern Ireland are sitting here with information that we know you need and can help you with. I, personally, find it frustrating when I am a minority member of a surname list, unable to help anyone; so, I unsubscribe. Janet
Hello Barbara, just a test at this moment. Will be putting a message out soon. Kind Regards Pam Groves
Hi Barbara, Firstly congratulations to you both! Secondly, not sure, I may have misunderstood your purpose in the recommendation of SURNAMES. I didnt make the suggestion to post naming interests, to cause a problem. d;^) FWIW I have tried those surname lists and I didnt find they were useful. It is however worth doing, for the experience. The problem I found was that, with respect, they are subscribed to the majority of members who are outside of the United Kingdom, searching within their own country in the main, never really touching on the roots, when their roots probably were, in the UK, Scotland and England & Wales and N. Ireland when the majority of us are working backwards. I dont want to cast a negative on this, just sharing my experience. Not sure the purpose for this, but it is often recognised in response or non response in group mails. Its been a while since I found a new "cousin" through this list. May I respectfully suggest, as I have in other lists, that where there is no mail traffic, its a good idea to post name interests again. It was that way that I found my cousin in Australia, and another since, simply by sharing. It may be worth my sharing my names again just in case new members might have similar interests. I hope my purpose is understood. Janet. Janet, thank you for posting. As host of this list, I was concerned that the lack of traffic meant there was a problem with the changeover in mailing list format that has taken place in the past few days...that's why the "tests"....and your posting coming through confirmed that others are getting through... Reposting surnames is a good idea... Thank you Janet, Barb L. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2006 11:42 AM Subject: Re: [DUNB] test > Not sure the purpose for this, but it is often recognised in response or > non response in group mails. I have recently acquired a sworn Testament, where there was apparently no Will. The estate was listed in an Inventory and the deceased's oldest daughter swore it before a Justice of the Peace. Information I received at the time may be of interest to you: Under Scots law moveable property (clothes, furniture, farm stock, crops etc) was disposed of in a will or testament, and heritable property (buildings, land) was disposed of by deed (these records have not been digitised). There were rules governing the inheritance of moveable property, which meant that it could be divided up among the family without a will being made. You can find more information about this in the Property and Inheritance FAQs on ScotlandsPeople:- http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/faqs/questions/index.aspx?380 The website of the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) has information about heritable property:- http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/deeds.asp http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/inheriting.asp Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Harvey" <[email protected]> > > > Is this the correct List to ask about Individual ancestors details or is it more social History and General ? > > I am always looking for information on Oldkilpatrick , Mains of Colquhoun > > COLQUHOUN familyand WILLIAMSON family. > Social history of Mains? > Schools and their records in Oldkilpatrick or neares, > Who would have attended school at various dates. > > Who left wills , if no Will would their be a record of intestacy . > meaning of entries in documents etc . > > These questions and many othrs I find make researching Scottish records different from some others. > > Any help or advice will be appreciated. > > > Sue H

Have you tried IGI, searching using Scottish naming patterns? Scottish Naming Patterns. 1st Son named after Fathers Father 2nd Son named after Mothers Father 3rd Son named after Father 4th Son named after Father's oldest brother 5th Son named after 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother 1st Daughter named after Mothers Mother 2nd Daughter named after Fathers Mother 3rd Daughter named after Mother 4th Daughter named after Mothers oldest sister 5th Daughter named after 2nd oldest sister or Fathers oldest sister That's not to say that every family followed them, but, when searching "blind", its often worth a try to get started. Hello List, Is there some kind soul that could look up the MI's for Dumbarton area Please. I am interested in finding the Transcripts of a grave, that is possibly not there anymore or damaged and faded. I am looking for any information on a Alexander Campbell Master Shoemaker who died on May 5, 1864 at 129, High Street, Dumbarton. on his death certificate it says he was the son of Andrew Campbell and Janet McNeish. Alexander was born between 1796 - 1798 in Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire, Scotland. But he and his wife Agnes nee Kelly and family moved to Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire after June 1855 but before July 1856. I would like to know if the inscriptions mentioned his children at all, and where they are buried maybe. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves
