Although there are similar dates etc, Es far as I know my James did not marry in Britain, but he had twins to Agnes Taylor, about 1852. In answer to your second Question I would suggest you get in touch with the Public Records Office, at Kew, England, who should be able to put you in touch with a military researcher. Best Regards, Phillip.

I have Andrew Boyd who was a soldier with them around 1866 (on his marriage cert). I am trying to find out if there is a list of where they were sent at different times as I have one of his children born in Cork, Ireland (Robert), one supposedly being born at Fort George, Inverness (Sarah) and another William Andrew in Ireland or England. Anything to point me looking in the right direction would be appreciated. Thank you. Linda

Dear Listers I am seeking assistance in relation to my family. I seem to have hit a brick wall. For some time now, I have been trying to find the parents and siblings of Malcolm McCALLUM who married Mary STEWART. They had the following children: Robert (1826 Barony - 1908 Maryborough, Vic Australia) m Emma Broggreff in Maryborough, Victoria Australia John (1828 Barony - death unknown) James (1831 Barony - death unknown) Duncan (1834 Barony - death and marriage unknown) Catherine (1838 Barony - Died 1915, Prahran Victoria, Australia) married (1867 in Victoria) to John Bell born in Glasgow. Donald (1836 Barony - death and marriage unknown) So, to my knowledge, only Robert and his sister Catherine came to Australia. Robert came as a purser/steward on a ship and was registered as a miner on the birth certificates of his first children adn then as a farmer on the latter certificates. The ship on which he came is said to be the Clarence, but I have not been able to find a ship of that name that arrived in Sydney or Victoria in about 1853 - which is when my mother has heard he arrived in Australia. My mother, who is the granddaughter of Robert McCallum (she is now 98) has 'heard' that the McCALLUMs came from around Loch Lomond (not sure where) and as a result, she was surprised when I found the place of birth of the children, her grandfather included. it may be that they came from around that area prior to their marriage. I have found a marriage of Malcolm McCallum and Mary Stewart in Durness in May 1820. Not sure if this is the same Malcolm and Mary. My mother always commented that we were entitled to wear the tartan of the Clan Stewart of Appin, and as far as I can see, the Stewarts of Appin were not from around Durness area. Any clues or ideas on how I could further reseasrch this family would be much appreciated. Regards Libby McMillan (Victoria, Australia)

I can't find a son James between 1810-1817. James' wife was Janet Shearer; they are both buried in Cumbernauld along with their family. Their tombstone was erected in 1815, I suspect when their daughter Margaret (the first daughter named Margaret, b.1815) died. Have still to confirm this in death records. Not sure where you are, other than your address is in the UK. From my research I know that some migrated to Australia - waves again at cousin Ann Kirk - and some into Canada. Mine however stayed here and went forth and multiplied and that was how my paternal grandmother found her man. As it happened he was a Butler in Kirkintilloch - I will look out the further details - and she was the daughter of the Harbourmaster of Tobermory Mull. Can you not imagine how these two conducted their romancing. I can.. There are a number of Alexander Rowat males, and one or two or more of them into business. Hope we can make a match somewhere. I will check my personal records again tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks Janet, I'll have a look and see if I can come up with another James. I have noticed the same names recurring; at least 3 generations of Alexanders (father to son), so very possible that James will recur also. To those listers who have subscribed to the DIGEST form.....in adjusting to the new system, when you reply to a message in a digest, you need to ONLY QUOTE the single message to which you are replying and snip off the rest of the digest. For those of you who are including all the digest messages along as you reply, you are used to getting the old digests in MIME format--so you could ask if you'd prefer getting the digests in the old format and I can do that for you...so let me know... Ann Kirk and I were able to expand our trees here a while back <waves at Ann in Oz> Since then we met another lady in Australia with similar interests, though not closely the HORN connection. I do there there are HORN folk in Aberdeenshire also. I have not extended the HORN line in my tree because quite frankly the HORN, ROWAT connection is huge, and tells a sad story of its own when it reaches my father Robert Rowat CHESTER b, 1915 - I have his line as a lateral line back to 1740s too. Your time span looks credible but have you looked for a James HORN, son of James between the marriage of James HORN b. 1787 - (say) 1810 and his son Alexander 1817?. Worth looking for I think because I found naming patterns were applied. Worth also looking for a Margaret someone as being James' wife.
