My ancestor Rev. Edward W. Dunbar was born in NY in 1823 and lived his early adult years in New Bedford, Massachusetts. After fighting and then being discharged from the Civil War in 1864 he became a traveling preacher - providing guest sermons, lecturing, singing and was involved in the Temperance movement. He traveled a lot and I know in 1864 he frequented Baltimore, Philadelphia and NY and occasionally Washington DC. In 1865 - at some point - he left his family in New Bedford (stopped writing or sending money). He's next heard from in Minnesota, where he married a young woman in November 1866 in Minneapolis. Less than a year later, he was arrested while 'street preaching' in Kansas City, Missouri in October 1867 for bigamy. My question is this - does he have/are there other families.. The young bride was Eunice/Unice Bell(e) Lewis. Her father may be a B.G. Lewis of Minneapolis. She of course sought and was given a divorce during his trial. Some newspaper clippings mention more than one wife (in addition to the New Bedford wife). Did Edward and Eunice have a child? Does anyone include a 'mysterious' E.W. Dunbar in their family tree? I'd love to talk with you if you do! Sherill

John Dunbar is my grandmother's brother. Barbara is her name. Their parents are Patrick and Sedina Dunbar. This is a very hard family to track. I can't find anything on Patrick. Sedina was a Morrison and born in Canada. Her Parents are Angus And Barbara (Ross) Morrison. Do you still live in Port Huron? Did you know any of the others in the family? Sedina is very hard to find, her name is either transcribed wrong or written wrong. They apparently moved alot in Canada, all the kids were born in different areas of Ontario. I do have a copy of the death certs. for both. Please contact me again and maybe we can figure this out. Marsha Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I feel really stupid as I forgot the Dunbarr families in Hopewell. That's in the area where I think the Christy family may have resided before moving to Westmoreland. I had a real senior moment. Your suggestions on the libraries was totally new to me and deserve follow-up. The Washington County and Allegheny county Dunbarr and Dunbare were also new and are strong possibilities if John and Sarah met after moving to Westmoreland. Can't thank you enough. Author: Lineage01 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1079.2.1.1.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi John, The following information is obtained from a Genealogical Map of the Counties in PA which shows the progression of the counties beginning in the 1600's and ends with their boundaries in 1932. This map was compiled and prepared by the Bureau of Land Records 1933. My edition is dated 1981 so the information that Billy has provided about Lancaster being formed out of Chester county could be correct. Here is a sample of what my map looks like. http://www.pabookstore.com/gemapofco.html In 1730, Westmoreland and just about all of SWestern & mid PA had their parentage traceable to Lancaster Co., PA. In 1755, all of the SWestern counties of PA were known as Cumberland Co. By 1780, Westmoreland Co. encompassed what's now known as Greene, Fayette, Washington, and the southern parts of Beaver, Allegheny, Armstrong, & Indiana. However by 1790, Cumberland Co was confined to mid-PA....far from Allegheny Co. If you've not already done so, you may have to research all the above counties. If you live anywhere near Ft. Wayne Ind. or Columbus OH, both cities offer excellent libraries which are aplenty with research books for all these counties. The library in Ft. Wayne has the largest public genealogical holding east of the Mississippi and the Main Library in Columbus OH recently acquired, and added to it's own large collection, all the State of Ohio's Genealogical holdings and is huge. This map supports Billy's Lancaster Co originating from Chester Co. http://www.familyhistory101.com/maps/pa_cf.html Actually, I've found 14 Dunbar's listed in the 1790 PA Census. It wasn't easy. The ones you probably are interested in are: 1.John Dumbare (Sr) - Allegheny Co., Pitt Twp, 2 males 16 , 3 males u16, and 8 females 2. Samuel Dunbarr - Washington Co, 1 male 16 , 2 males u16, 2 females - living next door to 3. Robert Dunbarr - Washington Co, 1 male 16 , 1 male u16, 4 females I found 4 in Cumberland County Hopewell Twp all spelled the same Dunbarr. 1 in Delaware Co., John Dunbarr Derby Twp, 2 males 16 , 0 males u16, 4 females. All the rest are the same. Catherine Dunbar in Bucks Co. was the wife of my ancestor Samuel Dunbar. If you have access to Heritage Quest Online, you should be able to acquire a copy of these Census. You must input the correct spelling of the last name. It's not like Ancestry where they give you numerous variations. You might be able to do an advanced search at Ancestry to acquire these Census. Hope this helps. Debra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
