Mine did and emigrated to Canada in 1832. There were quite a few Dunbars in Ontario - mine were from Alexander, Sr. bc1770 found in Wicklow with father named Samuel. His mother was a Moore. It is from the book "Vital Records of St. George, Maine". Included in there is an 1895 Town Census. In most cases they give ACTUAL birth dates AND also in most cases, they give the wife's maiden name. Apparently they're not all in alphabetical order, so I may be adding to this, so here goes: p. 516 Dunbar William G., b. Mar 5, 1834 Lucy J. (Poland), b. Everyone is invited to come, especially those living on the East coast or surrounding states. Follow this link to find out more about the Loch Norman Highland Games: http://www.ruralhillscottishfestivals.net/ Clan Dunbar members will be present along with Clan Genealogists , Tom Dunbar and Christine Kuhn. Tom is also Co-Administrator of our DNA Project and has provided invaluable information and knowledge towards the understanding of the Dunbar surname and ancestry. It will be a great opportunity for you to ask about DNA testing and talk with others who've tested. I will be present to answer any questions you may have about DNA testing or your results. Success Stories: 1. A DNA participant had her husbands Dunbar ancestry back to c1860 Massachusetts, USA. When his test results came back with a distinct result of 16 @ DYS 534 we started looking at the possibility that he descended from Robert Dunbar of Hingham MA 1693 via his son Peter. All of Peter's descendants carry this same unique marker value. We looked at Census records and it became very possible that this was the connection she'd been looking for. She, now, needed to find the paper proof. I just recently heard from her stating she'd found the proof via a baptismal record which ultimately linked her husband back to Robert of Hingham. An additional note needs to be added stating that all descendants of Peter Dunbar are also Mayflower descendants via his wife, Sarah Thaxter. 2. We have a participant who'd been trying to discover if they descended from William "Old Hatter" Dunbar b. c1782 Pennsylvania, USA and his wife Sarah Prather. Most of "Old Hatter's" family moved into Illinois, USA as did our new participant. They all lived in the same area but no records have been found which connected the two families together until DNA. A known descendant of "Old Hatter" had tested at the beginning of the Project so all the new participant had to do was submit to testing. There is now NO doubt that these two men share a common ancestor. They each have the exact same DNA. It is still not clear whether he descends from "Old Hatter" or a brother of "Old Hatter" but, a long time mystery of whether these 2 families are related has been resolved. One cannot assume that all Dunbar's in a particular area are all related. Take Butler County, Pennsylvania. It was a den of Dunbar's in the 1800's. So far, we have tested 4 different families from that area..2 were found to be genetically related while the other 2 are not related to each other nor with the two who were found related. We are still looking for men to represent the other Dunbar families found in Butler County. 3. Our next participant had her brother DNA tested. Her ancestry only went back to her great-grandfather Francis Draper Dunbar b. 1842 Canton, Massachusetts, USA. She provided me with some additional information which I took with me to Ft. Wayne, Indiana to research. While there I discovered a book which took her family line back to John Dunbar who emigrated to America c1700 from Scotland to Boston. This book talked of how John's son Samuel trained for the ministry under Cotton Mather. Now armed with this new information she was able to get her ancestry back an additional 2 more generations to c1650. DNA shows that her family is related to our Lineage 3 men and has provided that Line with new information to help further their research. What will you discover? What are you waiting for?
