    1. [DUNBAR] Kilconzie the Younger.
    2. Patrick R. L. Dunbar
    3. With deepest regret I have to report the death in October 2010 of Graham William DUNBAR, Kilconzie the Younger, at the age of 90. I received the news today, in a note from his dear widow Alice. You may recall that Graham's father, Lt. Col. Sir William Henry George Dunbar of Kilconzie, was unsuccessful in his attempt to be recognised as the head of the Dunbar line. The legal decision was made in favour of Jean Ivor Dunbar, who succeeded as the 13th. Baronet of Mochrum. The present head is his son, Sir James Michael Dunbar, 14th. Baronet of Mochrum, who to my knowledge was resident in North Carolina in 2008. Over the years Graham and I corresponded infrequently, and on a visit to their home in Hertfordshire, England, I was given a copy of the research notes for his father's book 'Dunbar 1000 Years'. Tomorrow I will be searching on-line for obituaries and I will post any information I discover. Patrick R. L. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DebraNowell Surnames: Dunbar Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1176/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dunbar DNA Project Update We have 149 participants in the Dunbar Project and we need many more! With Christmas just around the corner what better gift to give or receive than discovering your genetic ancestry. In October, I attended a conference for Project Administrators at Family Tree DNA in Houston, Texas for some in-depth DNA training. Family Tree DNA is the testing company found to be the best in the business and we utilize them to process our DNA test kits. I am a volunteer who is adamant about discovering my Dunbar ancestry. If you're tracing your Dunbar ancestors, you'll want to take a Y-DNA test. Like surnames, Y-DNA is passed down from father to son to son, generation after generation virtually unchanged. Because of this, you can find close Dunbar ancestors as well as very ancient Dunbar ancestors. You must be male with the Dunbar surname or find a male Dunbar relative to test. If you are female, with no male Dunbar ancestors to test, you now have the option to take a Family Finder test. This tests the Autosomal chromosomes which include all branches of your family tree. Males can also take this test. While Y-DNA can track a direct male lineage back 1000 years, Family Finder is limited in the number of generations it can confidently predict a genetic match. (i.e. three generations.) Family Finder was just introduced this year and is still in its infancy. Family Tree DNA just announced their Annual Holiday Sale which runs through Dec. 31. You'll need to perform an Internet search to find a company that has it in stock. If you'd like to contact me, I can give you my personal experience with ordering this book. One "book store" canceled my order and when I called they told me they didn't know when or if they'd get more copies even though it's still listed on their website. I was able to purchase a copy through another company and got the book w/i a week. Since, I rec'd my first book, I've ordered additional copies for Christmas gifts to my family. (Yes, I love everything Dunbar!) ISBN: 978 1 904607 94 6 My thought: If we get enough people interested with this book, maybe, it'll encourage Elsa Hamilton to write additional Dunbar books that cover dates beyond c.1289. The more info, especially documented, about the ancient Dunbar's the better! Author: DebraNowell Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1175/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Finally, another DUNBAR book to add to your collection.  Just published Oct. 1, 2010, titled "Mighty Subjects - The Dunbar Earls in Scotland c.1072-1289" By Elsa Hamilton. Unlike the Dunbar quadilogy books by Nigel Tranter which are Historical Fiction, this is a well documented 301 page book that includes footnotes, pedigree charts, beautiful color plates of the Earl's Seals, maps of their land holdings, appendices and bibliograpy. Here is just one write-up about the book by the Publisher: Late in the eleventh century, Gospatric, former earl of Northumbria, was granted the fortress of Dunbar and the lands in Lothian surrounding it by Malcolm III, king of Scots. Gospatric's descendants, who came to be known as earls of Dunbar, became leading members of the Scottish aristocracy, conspicuous for their power and wealth as lords of vast estates in south-east Scotland and beyond. Drawing on the evidence of their charters and contemporary chronicles this book spans the careers of seven successive earls at Dunbar from the period of the Norman Conquest of England to the eve of the Scottish Wars of Independence. It recreates and analyses the Dunbar lordship in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Scotland, exploring the landscape and the economy of the earldom, the web of human relationships within and outwith the family, the tugs-of-war with the Church. There are traces of long-vanished castles, echoes of battle and fleeting glimpses of crusade and tournament and siege. This is a story of a great family in the evolving kingdom of the Scots, cross-border lords who gave unambiguous allegiance to the Scottish Crown, mighty subjects of successive Scottish kings. Elsa Hamilton graduated in history from the University of Glasgow and worked as a teacher of history and politics. She gained a PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2004. Now retired, she focuses on writing and is involved in charity work and politics. Debra Dunbar Nowell Admin.
