If this is so, my thought about the boys heading to NY in 1750 may be because of their mother's death. Either given over to family because William was unable to care for them alone or for apprenticeships. Is it known what happened to his daughters? Do any of William's descendants end up in Pennsylvania US? Many escaped the British to PA from Long Island and NYC. We have a couple DNA participants with ancestry dating back to 1780's eastern PA but can't find ancestry any further back. Please check out our Patriarchs page: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/dunbar/pats Go all the way down to Lineage 5 and your best contact will be the first one in that group listed as D-61 & D-150. You'll find his email listed as well. We have many people following this family and E. Dunbar can provide you with additional family names. We are dealing with two different Dunbar families who settled in the St. Mary's area dating back to 1650 as you'll read in the description for that lineage on the Patriarchs page. One being William and another being John. We have a historical record, for John b. 1661 Scotland stating that his father was John of Glasgow Scotland. However, most of this family is insisting that William Dunbar c1650 is the father of John based on the records that William appears in St. Mary's MD around 1650. There is no evidence connecting the two. We'd really like to get this one sorted out. Do you have any information that might help? He didin't marry Therese Fluery d'Eschambault until 1764. Welles states that the three brothers(15,13 & 10) left for Hyde Park, N.Y. about 1750. Not likely on their own. With their mother perhaps? William remained in Canada wth the British army until his death in 1788. I'm descended through Joseph/Joseph Jr., who went to Digby, Nova Scotia (Loyalist) about 1780. Am I reading your info correctly? This means both publications are wrong. It makes a person wonder about the original source of both publications. I can only get you back from the Major, not forward. So, all I have about the 6 children, from the 1st wife, is what's in the "Antiquity" publication. Hopefully, someone else following this thread can shed some light on the Major's first wife. Which son do you descend from; George, Joseph, or Peter? Plus, I'm going to send this thread to Tom Dunbar, the Clan Dunbar genealogist, to ask if he knows anything about a 1st wife. When I say we're Distant Cousin's, I mean that the Y-DNA says my father's Y-DNA genetically matches the Y-DNA of the Mochrum and Durn lines who descend from Gospatric. We just don't know where in that lineage we descend. BTW...my father's name is Donn Dunbar! You are very fortunate to have a paper trail leading back to Gospatric. Most of the 170 men in our Project don't. We are utilizing the Y-DNA from key Dunbars to help sort the men w/o paper trails to Gospatric into the House of Dunbar. Sponsorship funds are available should you be interested in having your specific branch of Dunbar represented in our Project. Our Sponsorship funds are donated by the DNA participants and Clan Dunbar. We've awarded over $4000.00 since 2006. Hope you'll join this very exciting project. You live closer than I do to New Hampshire. Many of your cousins will be there. We may even have a Dunbar competing in the Games!! It's been a very long time since Clan Dunbar held their Annual Meeting in the New England area and this may be the only opportunity for many years to come. Hope you can make it to Loon Mtn. Janet Young. The site is the Dunbar Extract from "American Family Antiquity" by Albert Welles 1880. I don't know anything about a 1st wife. This book and Burke's Peerage only shows one wife: "He married, about 1734, the daughter of Count de Chambaud, of Montreal, in Canada and had issue.." These two publications connect you with the House of Dunbar dating back to Crinan b. 975 and the Dunbar of Mochrum line. What their sources were is unknown. http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/FH23&CISOPTR=60542&CISOSHOW=60531 We are distant cousins. I'm the Administrator, along with Tom Dunbar the Clan Dunbar Genealogist, of the DNA Project. My father was the 1st Dunbar to test for this very important study. We have the Y-DNA of 3 confirmed House of Dunbar descendants, 2 from the Mochrum line. It sure would be helpful if we could get a 3rd from the Mochrum line. To learn more about the project please visit our Project website: http://www.dunbardna.org I can provide a scan of the Burke's Peerage 2003 page with Major William Dunbar's name. If you don't already have a copy, please contact me at: dunbardna AT gmail.com Depending on where you're located, you can meet your cousin, Sir James Dunbar of Mochrum, in Sept. at the Loon Mountain Highland Games in New Hampshire USA. His father was John Dunbar married to Mary Keith,..then David and then Peter, ...the line goes back to Mayflower traveler, Richard Warren. Clan Dunbar has provided some great history, but my problem is Appollos who came to Johnsburg New York early l800s and at some point his daughter met and married Ralph who was about 25 years her senior.
