Second: you have conflated two different Dunbar family's into one. Ann Theopold Chaplin who wrote "Robert Dunbar of Hingham MA" pub. 1992 also wrote a paper titled "John of Connecticut" in which she has documented the discrepancies between the two family's. According to your line of descent, it appears you descend from John of Connecticut and not Robert of Hingham. Your John did not marry Mary Aldrich but Anne "unk. You've attached your Dunbar family to the wrong John. The DNA Project has tested men from both families and the results verify Ann's information below....that these two families are NOT related via a direct male ancestor. "The John Dunbar who married Elizabeth Beecher at New Haven, Connecticut 24 Jul 1700 has frequently been said to be the son of Robert Dunbar of Hingham, MA. This has been found to be incorrect. Donald Lines Jacobus in an article published in July of 1965 in The American Genealogist corrected the error for which he himself had largely been responsible. In his works Families of Ancient New Haven and Families of Old Fairfield he had made the assertion that John was the son of Robert. In his "additions and corrections" to that latter volume he also corrects the error. John Dunbar was at Fairfield, CT with a wife Anne before coming to New Haven. Anne was admitted to Christ Church, Fairfield 21 Oct 1694. As Mr. Jacobus pointed out in his article, John "cannot have been in Hingham and Fairfield during the same time period, 1694-1697" Maybe you should DNA test to discover which Dunbar family you truly descend from! Ninian's grandson/Robert's son Robert was knighted in 1660, He married Grizzel Brodie in 1654. Our Robert ("of Hingham") was in Massachusetts in the 1650s, his wife's name was Rose. Many American genealogists have tried to chase down Robert's parentage without success. A good summary is right here on rootsweb: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~legends/dunbar.html The original source of the misinformation is apparently "The Genealogy of the Dunbar Family," by the Rev. Melzar Dunbar (1886). The Dunbar DNA project has some lineage information up at http://www.dunbardna.org/dnadunbarlineage.htm Unfortunately "Robert" is a very common name in the Dunbar family, and "Dunbar" was a very common name among the POWs transported to the North American colonies in the 1600s. As it was common practice for families to take the name of their location/district as their surname, there is no basis for concluding that all those Dunbars were related to one another. Hope this helps, even though it is not helpful! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Especially when there is so much written evidence, such as the Millenium File and so on. I will agree that Robert was too young to be a knight. I also have evidence of Robert being indentured to Mr. Foote. If we can prove who Robert is not. Then there should be some evidence of who he was. Were the Scottish Dunbars aristocrats or peasants? His son John married Martha Aldrich in 1679. John and Martha had a son who was also named John (1680-1746). John married Elizabeth Fenn. Their son Samuel married Lois Holt. Samuel and Lois had a son named Daniel (1770-1847)who married Candace Andrews. Daniel and Candace had a son whom they named Daniel Franklin Dunbar. His wife's name was Fanny Ann Chamberlain. It was the next generation that moved west to Kansas. My g-grandfather was Herbert Eugene Dunbar. He married twice. His second wife was Malitta Victoria Ellis. They were my grandfather's parents. My grandfather was John Milton Dunbar. His only brother was Benjamin Harmon Dunbar. Is there anyone out there related to John Milton or Benjamin? Can anyone varify or disprove Robert's relationship with Ninian Dunbar. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
