Author: zaylah46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1217.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Patthepiper, All I know is what was told to me by my husband Eustace Charles DunbarIII, who was 2nd generation Dunbar - born in Jamaica, W.I. His father Eustace DunbarII was born in Jamaica also, married a French/Jamaican woman whose last name was Marin. But that his father- Eustace Dunbar the First was born in Scotland and came to Jamaica with his brother- possibly as merchant seamen. He must have had a fair amount of money when he got there for he bought a 300 acre plantation(I was told)in a parish called St.Mary's. When he passed away he left the plantation to his son-Eustace the second, my husband's father. THAT Eustace left the plantation in the hands of a brother of his and headed for ports unknown as a merchant seaman. Meanwhile, said brother(whose name I never knew) never paid taxes so the plantation so it was confiscated by the Jamaican government. I'm trying to figure out how to find deed records for lands bought and sold in Jamaica that coinsided with the times the Dunbars were in Jamaica. I am trying to find my husband's sister so I may piece together a better history: What were the other brothers' names. What location in Scotland the first Dunbars were from. Merchant ships from Scotland to Jamaica and from Jamaica to New Yoek City. The FIRST ship to arrive in Jamaica from Scotland. If there were any Dunbars aboard, etc. If I find any links to the past Dunbars I will post them here. Thx for your info, you've given me some useful clues to work with. Maybe I've given you some ideas to help you on your quest. Good Hunting to you as well! I'll be here doing the same. I was born in 1950, so my contacts have been limited to their sons, daughters and grandchildren, of which my father, Jack Douglas Dunbar is one. I met Minnie E. Strauch, their daughter- for whom I was a dead ringer when she was my age. My younger sister Holly, looked a lot like Ester when she was a teen. I spent several days with Great Aunt Minnie E.'s son Jim, who graduated Harvard and became a dermatologist in San Antonio. I was an exchange student in Central Mexico and a friend and I went up to Texas to get her green card renewed mid-year in 1970. Jim was my younger sister, Laurel's godfather too. Zebulon Wright Davis Dunbar was my grandfather- who died early- so I never met him. I did spend time with our Great Uncle Gordon at his home in the 60s and met some of his beautiful grandchildren with the surname Morgan. My father spoke of Aunt Jean and cousin Janet. They were among his favorite relatives. Thanks for posting here and there. Write if you feel like it. I would like to ask you about some of your sources. If you have more names and dates please post them to the list. I am researching the name DUNBAR and amongst my data I have very few connections to Jamaica, no family lines, just scraps of information along the following lines. 1 - Helen, born Jamaica, married John DUNBAR. They were in Liverpool England in 1882, then Glasgow Scotland where son James Ernest was born 2 - Mary, born JAM married a DUNBAR and in 1881 she was running a boarding house in Glasgow, SCT. 3 - In 1800 Robert DUNBAR worked in Edinburgh SCT. His daughter Ann G. married a second Robert DUNBAR, and she died about January 1851, Newhall, Anotta Bay, JAM. 4 - In the ENG 1881 census is a (visiting) sailor Robert DUNBAR, b. 1826, Falmouth, JAM - so you see I can offer little help but will be watching replies to your posting. Let me know if any of the above is of use and I will see if I can search for further connections. Good hunting! Pat Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: zaylah46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1217/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There were two brothers from Scotland who travelled to the island of Jamaica. One I was told, went back to Scotland but the other settled there a woman from Jamaica. He settled in St. Mary's Parrish in Jamaica and was successful enough acquire a pretty large plantation there. He named it but I cannot remember the whole name. I think it ended with 'stowe'(not sure of the spelling also) that was the first generation Dunbar in Jamaica. The second generation Dunbar inherited his dad's land, married a lady who was French and Jamaican. But he wanted to go to New York so he left it his land in the hands of an uncle and off he went to the New York City. Where I was told he became a cop for a while. The Third generation dunbar worked in the medical field. What im trying to find out is where in Scotland the two original Dunbar brothers were from. There are provinces in Scotland with the Dunbar name. And, Where did the other original brother go to in Scotland. The timeline has to be 1800s or earlier. I may have the oportunity to travel the and I would like to bave more info on the Dunbars from Jamaica. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: graffiasaf29 Surnames: Dunbar / Clark / Mitchell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1215/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been searching for years trying to establish a link between my g.g. grandfather Hiram R. Dunbar and a Rice W. Dunbar whom I believe is related to my g.g. grandfather. My g.g. grandfather was born July 05, 1804 (according to a graving on his tombstone) in Paris, Kentucky. Rice W. Dunbar (a Captain of one of the wagon trains in the great emigration of 1846 to Oregon & California) was born Feb. 06, 1802 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. Hiram's parents were Samuel Dunbar & Jane Clark. Although I have not found who the parents of Rice Dunbar were, I have long suspicioned that he was either a brother of Hiram's, or a 1st cousin. I arrived at this conclusion because: 1.) There is only 2 years difference in their age. 2.) Hiram has a son named Rice O. 3.) Various statistics place the two of them in a close proximity during their early lives. Hiram was born in Paris, Kentucky and Rice was born in Hamilton Co., Ohio (one of the counties bordering Kentucky). Unfortunately Hiram is the only child I have found listed, so far, for Samuel Dunbar & Jane Clark. Incidentally; Samuel was married twice - his other wife was a Catharine (Unknown). However, Samuel Dunbar's parents are believed to be William Dunbar & Mary Mitchell. According to a Bourbon Co., Kentucky Land Records, Deed Book C 1794-1796 a William Dunbar and spouse (Mary), whom I believe to be Mary Mitchell were involved in a land transaction consisting of 100 acres on July 19, 1796 to a Conrod Sidener. The website seems to establish that Hiram's parents (at least for a period of time) lived in Paris, Kentucky on the Stoney Branch of the Licking River where Hiram was born. Now, if I could just find something that establishes who Hiram's brother and sisters were.......or proves that Rice W. was a brother. I would welcome feedback.
