There has been talk of reducing the period to 75 years but I don't know what the present situation is. Newspapers might have either, or both, so I'd search for both. It is also potentially a hint that the father's name may have been John, and the son opted to be "Jack" rather than "Johnnie" - a possibility to keep in mind. Her adoptive parent called Thomas and Sarah, I was told by my mum that Thomas was her actually uncle as she was Thomas's brother's daughter. I once again was told by my mum that Mary had three brothers from Thomas's brother and the same mother. She thinks Mary's brothers name were Tommy, Jack and Ronnie. Mmm since you mentioned 'Ronald' it could be Ronnie's name... I will check out now. And you also mentioned 'John', so my mum could be wrong with the name? xxx Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Sally_Wilkins Surnames: Dunbar Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunbar/1220.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: first, what country did all this take place in? I'm guessing UK based on "Buckinghamshire"? I don't have access to the 1931 UK census but that's where I would begin - not looking for Mary, obviously, but for a man in Durham with the last name Dunbar and sons Thomas, John and possibly Ronald. It looks like the most recent UK census online may be 1901, I don't know if more recent data is available in paper research. City directories might help but aren't likely to have children's names. Baptismal records (especially if you know Mary/Sylvia was born in Durham) would be a great help, as they will give both parents' names. Newspaper archive searches for the sons' names may yield funeral notices with survivor and parent names. You could also search for Thomas and Sarah there. It's made difficult by the fact that none of the names are uncommon, but that may give you some places to begin. Also, this may be obvious, but have you searched in family homes for any informal records - old newspaper clippings, prayer cards, books with names inscribed in the front cover, etc? I am trying my best to explains. Mary Elizabeth Dunbar's real name when she was born in 1933, but changed to Sylvia Ella when she was adoptive by her Uncle as her mother died when she was born and her real father was not able to cope with her, that which I was told by my mum and aunt (Mary's two daughters, and I am her granddaughter). Mary have three brothers - Tommy (could be thomas), Jack, Ronnie (unsure name), that's which Mary's real father keep boys to himself but not Mary. Mary's Uncle and aunty - Thomas I thinks and his wife Sarah took over and brought Mary up since. I have a slightly problem - My nanny (Mary Elizabeth) passed away in 2010, so I couldn't able to ask her more about it. I have been trying to look for Thomas Dunbar (her real father's brother) and his brother (Mary's real father thats which we don't know the name) we have been stuck on it. We don't know what Mary's real father's name or whatever. And Mary's grandparent as well. Even Mary's uncle/aunt etc. Sylvia Ella is married to Maurice Edward Long in Durham and she was born in Durham, they have four children - One born in Durham and other three born in Buckinghamshire. I can't ask Maurice more about it as he was also passed away in 1998. Like I said it was so complication. Any infor or advise or whatever it is would be great and it would be appericate. The Dunbar DNA Project is looking for new participants who have ancestry to a specific location in the UK. Your Dunbar's go back to Comber, Ireland. We have many tested Dunbar men who haven't been able to establish a paper trail to Europe or they only know of a country of origin (i.e. England, Ireland, Scotland). So, it is crucial we find participants with an exact location to help these Dunbar men further their genealogical research. Should the DNA of your Dunbar match any of our tested men, you've just provided these men with a huge clue. The advantage to you is you'll discover which of our tested Dunbar men you're genetically related too. Plus, we have many tested Dunbars who still live in the UK and a match with one of them could provide a new clue for you. The DNA Project can offer significant Sponsorship funds towards the purchase a test kit. The test is a simple mouth swab and done in the privacy of your home. To take advantage of the Sponsorship, you'll need to have a male with the Dunbar surname; husband, son, uncle, nephew, or cousin. We have almost 200 participants and have given away almost $6,000.00 (usd) in Sponsorship funds. To learn more please contact me. This gives her a birth date of Cir 1890. In the 1901 Census there was a Christiana b.1890, daughter of William and Mary and with siblings Lillie, John, Maggie, & Andrew living in Killinchy Street, Comber. There also was a Christana b.1896 living at Bridge Street, Comber with her parents William John & Charlotte, and siblings James, Agnes, Minnie, George, John, & Sarah. As the former were Presbyterian and the latter Church of Ireland I'd be fairly sure the first one is my Christina because she was married in the Presbyterian Church. The first name Christina was rare at that time but, as you can see, spelling wasn't always reliable. I had thought I mightn't find my Christina as she was called Teenie by the family. I hope there's something useful in this for you - please let me know. Roy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My parents own a farm in Deavertown (near McConnelsville, Ohio). They found an old deed in the house that mention Allen Black as the original owner. I do believe this is your grandfather. They found his marker at the church a mile down the road from their farm and sent me a picture. My father's maternal grandfather is a Black and we've been trying to trace back to see if and how Allen Black might be related to his ancestor. The male line is: Oatis Black (unknown dates) David Black (1795-1875: Bearfield, Perry County, Ohio) David P. Black (1833 -1907: Perry/Fairfield County, Ohio) Dewitt Clinton Black (1857-1932: Perry/Licking County, Ohio) Perry Oliver Black (1906-1967: Fairfield County, Ohio) I would just look at your tree, but I can't afford a subscription right now. We have 2 men tested with Jamaican ancestry. One lives in the US and the other in Luxembourg. DNA results show that neither one is genetically related. Would your husband's DNA match one of these gentlemen or be of completely different ancestry. It would be wonderful if someone with Jamaican ancestry would take the time to research this area. Just doing a basic search at Familysearch.org I found a birth record as far back as 29 Nov 1663 at St. Michael, Barbados for a Wm Dunbar. Familysearch has been continually adding birth, death, and marriage records. Many of the records have pics of the documents. Also, there is a new publication titled "The Sugar Barons: Family, Corruption, Empire, and War in the West Indies" by Matthew Parker that I picked up at the library a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, there are no Dunbars listed in the Index but there's an extensive bibliography which might give some resources for you to look into. The start date for the book is about 1640. It's very possible that some of the Scottish Dunbars were prisoners of war and transported to the island's as indentured servants. The family info for our Luxembourg Dunbar can be found listed as D-126 on the DNA Patriarchs page. http://www.dunbardna.com/wfpatriarchs.htm Our Project offers a Rebate for any Dunbar to test. Hello Zaylah, Checking Family Search reveals several Eustace DUNBARs, but I couldn't locate a mother with MARIN as a maiden name. Near-misses found were Edith Caroline MARALES, Edith Caroline MANAHAN and Edith MARCHAN. The husband for all three was shown as Robert DUNBAR, so I suggest that the three Ediths are the same person - but none of this appears to relevant to your search. Regretfully, I don't have time to investigate further - at present I'm fully committed to updating families from UK census data. Regarding your "...I am trying to find my husband's sister so I may piece together a better history..." this would be a great starting point. When starting a family history the usual advice is the start from yourself, then your nearest relatives and work backwards in time. Record *everything *- a family fable *may* contain a grain of truth. Beware of 'experts' and be especially careful of internet data. I don't know what Jamaican records are available and what they contain, but for your nearest and dearest, check birth, marriage and death certificates. Gravestones too; dates may not agree precisely - but note them all. Keep track of your progress with a Pedigree Chart in which you note basic details of yourself, your parents, your grandparents and so on. If you want a blank chart, email me and I will send you one - alternatively you could find one on the web. Check the internet for Jamaican forums. The USA-based family history society Clan Dunbar Inc. may be able to help - 'google' and you will find them. When you have assembled a family line it may be advantageous to get male members to take DNA tests - I would suggest surfing for the Dunbar DNA project for information on this type of research. If you get more information on the Scottish connections, please get back to me - I may be able to offer further help. Kind regards - and good hunting! Pat -- *Patrick R. L.
