This is not my family. I'm taking this info from "The Descendants of Robert Dunbar of Hingham, Massachusetts" by Ann Theopold Chaplin, pub. 1992. It's out of print but available at many major genealogy holding libraries. The line goes: 1. Robert Dunbar b. c1630 prob. Scotland and Rose ? 2. Peter Dunbar and Sarah Thaxter 3. James Dunbar and Experience Haywood 4. Josiah Dunbar and Silence (Edson) Packard 5. Josiah Dunbar and Martha "Patty" Russell 6. Chester Dunbar & Roxy Ann ? 7. Lodema b. in NY c1833 That's all the info the book provides about Lodema. Ann sites sources for the children of Josiah & Martha. "Vital Records of Pelham, MA to the Year 1850", "Pelham VRs 33" and Pension File said 9 children. Ann only lists 6 children. A recent find not included in her book is John Dunbar b. c1793 & Hannah Pettingell. I'm keeping a database for Clan Dunbar of this major US family and would like to add your family info from Lodema down to you. The current Clan Dunbar Chieftain also descends from Josiah & Martha. You can contact me off list with the additional info. DunbarDNA AT gmail.com Debra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her father, Chester Dunbar, was born in Massachusetts in 1796 and emigrated to Lewis County, New York, some time before 1828. His daughter, Lodem[i]a, was born in New York in 1833, as was her older brother Dexter, and according to the 1850 census the family was living in Greig, New York as of that date. On that same census, Lodema's mother is listed as Roxy Ann (maiden name possibly "French"), also born in Massachusetts in 1804. If anyone has any further information about either Chester Dunbar or Roxy Ann [French], I would greatly appreciate it. It's possible that this is the Chester Dunbar who was born in Pelham, Mass, to Josiah and Martha "Patty" Russell, but I have no proof of that other than the birthdate and the state. Many thanks for any help! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His mother, I have several variations of the name of the person I believe to be his mother, Roama, Roana, Rowna and Rosanna Dunbar. Her parents: John & Margaret Dunbar(??) I do know he had a child with a Mary Louise Chamberlain in Harris County, Texas in 1933, a son who was named a Jr. I did find a Carey with a Louise in Springfield Ohio in 1916. I know that is not much, but that is all I have at this time. Thanks again for any pointers anyone might be able to help with. She was born on 23rd February 1933 and died on August 2010 and the reason I brought up thomas's name was because Thomas was my nanny's uncle (it was thomas who adoption her when she was newborn baby) and I don't know what my nanny's birth parent name, but I only know Thomas was because he was my nanny's father's brother and once again thomas was my nanny's adoption father. She was born in Durham. She was married to Maurice Edward Long in Durham, I think. Thomas Dudley Dunbar was born in 1895 and in Northumberland and he got married to Sarah Beattie in 1919, in Northumberland. And my nanny's birth mother passed away at childbirth, her nanny's father could not cope with newborn baby and gave her up to Thomas. Claudius as a given name for a Scottish-born Dunbar is unusual. My Dunbar database (the result of over 20 years reseach)contains only one - could this be the link to Jamaica? The family I have is - Parents Robert DUNBAR & Euphan LYON, children Claudius born 27 September 1761 & Alexander 30 June 1763, both born in North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. I have watched this thread with great interest and hope it continues and we are able to stitch together what at present are several loose ends. Since we are tracking the Dunbar surname, participants must be males with the last name of Dunbar. Our Project can offer a Rebate on the purchase of a Y-DNA test kit. To learn more please contact me at the Project's email: DunbarDNA AT gmail.com According to several websites, slavery in Jamaica was abolished in 1834. It's possible that a Dunbar or more were slave owners prior to that date but none were listed in that recent publication. Finding the land records prior to 1834 might give the Jamaica Dunbar's more information. I did find two Claudius Dunbar's born in Jamaica at FamilySearch.org. I'm trying to locate info on him in ships manifests...in case he was a seaman. His son, Euastace Charles II was a seaman. I found some info on his travels on several ships sailing from England to NY...early 1900s. found another surname associated with him, it was Sutherland. I hope this info will help you in some way. I recently located Eustace the second's daughter, I am also trying to bit by bit get as much info as I can about the Dunbars in JAmisca. Any info we can share will answer many questions. Did Nathaniel have a relative named Eustace? Do you have a birth date for Nathaniel? Did he run a plantation in Jamaica with a two-word title name whose last part was 'Stowe'? Was he related to Jane Elizabeth Davis of Buff Bay in Portland, Jamaica? It'll be fascinating to find out whether or not they are the same Dunbars. Good hunting.
