Hi all, I wouldn't go as far as to say that Scotland was 'known' as North Britain until the 1900s, but the term 'North Britain', usually abbreviated to 'N.B.', was widely used for addressing correspondence during the nineteenth century. Personally I would regard it more as a 'fashion' amongst certain segments of the population rather than anything else during that time. During the height of the Scottish Nationalist movement in the late 1940s, I remember distinctly it was indeed the "fashion" to indicate N.B., after Scotland. Fashions comes and go, even with postal addresses, and I haven't received a letter from Scotland in the 50 years I've been on this side of the pond with the N.B. appellation. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Iain Hutchison" <iain@keapub.fsnet.co.uk> To: <DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 12:06 PM Subject: Re: [D-G LIST] NB > Hi all, > > I wouldn't go as far as to say that Scotland was 'known' as North Britain > until the 1900s, but the term 'North Britain', usually abbreviated to > 'N.B.', was widely used for addressing correspondence during the > nineteenth century.
