G'Day Listers, After my initial post regarding my McKenzie, Brown & Hunter families I have narrowed down information on this family from some wonderful people and their help and advise has been very helpful, THANK YOU to you all. I have found the family of James McKenzie in the 1841 Census for Dumfries as James 45, Jannet 22, Andrew 20, William 15, Mary 12, Agness 10 and Thomas 8. (My Alexander was already in Tasmania as of 1838). By reading this I am now "assuming" that Catherine (Katherine, Katherina) McKenzie (nee Brown) was dead before 1841. Would SKS be able to find a death for her and if possible a marriage of James & Catherine? It appears that the child of James McKenzie & Mary Hunter (that was mentioned in a letter from Andrew to his brother Alexander) was born in 1840 and named Margaret McKenzie. What was the way of naming children born out of wedlock, could they just be given the father's surname? Andrew mentioned that the child had cost their father about 100 pounds to settle it. I am again "assuming" that James McKenzie did not marry Mary Hunter. A search of the 1851 Census in Dumfries listed a Margaret McKenzie as being the grand daughter of James Hunter. In this household there were James , Helen (wife of James Hunter), Margaret (daughter of James), Helen (grand daughter of James) and Margaret McKenzie (grand daughter of James). There was no mention of a daughter named Mary Hunter. Is SKS able to find out for me anything about Mary Hunter to help confirm that the above could be her family? James McKenzie and his children Janet, William, Mary, Agnes and Thomas all went to Canada/USA to live. Andrew McKenzie is not found on the 1851 Census in Dumfries. I know from his letter that he married Jane Small, and their children were named Andrew Alexander, James, Thomas & Catherine (they had 3 children that died prior to 1857). Is it possible to find this family on any Census? The letter was post marked from Annan, Scotland. Andrew said his wife Jane Small was from Hoddam. Again thank you to all that have helped out with pieces of information on this family. It all goes together to help fill in the massive jig saw puzzle that I have on this family. All the best to you all, Melissa in OZ..
