    3. The Archiving Group in Langholm have obtained premises in the High Street, Langholm (on the right, opposite the petrol filling station as you enter from Carlisle). The premises were officially opened on Saturday 30 October 2004. At present the Group is involved in cataloguing the local newspaper, the "Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser" - its first issue was in 1848, and members meet to index regularly in the Centre's premises. In six months, the 2000+ entry index is up to 1856. However, with our own premises, progress should proceed quicker. The Group also have been donated a huge collection of photographs and paperwork, and at present they are being scanned, sorted and catalogued: it's a mammoth task. Photographs from the collection have regularly featured in displays throughout the summer in the Town Hall Gallery in Langholm. The Group is very much in its infancy, and is finding its way by trial and error. However, should you be in Langholm, and notice the sign "Langholm Archive Centre" in a shop window, please call in. The volunteers have a wealth of local knowledge, and if they don't know the answer, then they may be able to point you in the right direction. Members of the group have recorded Ewes, Unthank, Wauchope, Staplegordon and Langholm Old Churchyards. Westerkirk (Bentpath) churchyard has recently been completed and the memorial inscriptions are being re-checked before being made available, like the other churchyard memorials, in book form. Once a winter rota has been drawn up, and an email contact address and/or web page established, I'll post more substantial information. The Group is indebted to local trusts and individuals without whose support the premises would not have been obtained. Bruce Langholm

    3. Hi Bruce Congratulations on the venture, I will be visiting at some point in the future. I'm sure this will become a great asset to Langholm, and to the descendants of those who lived there in the past. The genealogical community at large will benefit enormously.
