    1. A place called Bogg, near Canobie
    2. Hi everyone I have a couple of ancestors born at Bogg (as opposed to in a bog!), somewhere near Canonbie. I've searched old maps and not found anything, and presume it was either a very small village or the name of an estate or property. Anyone have any ideas about this please? Thanks Annie Auckland, NZ

    3. Hi Annie, There is a house (in the 19th century it was a dairy) called Bogg near Sanquhar. This is unlikely to be your Bogg as it is many miles from Canonbie, but it was situated next to a bog and in 19th century correspondence was also referred to as Bog. However on one occasion it was written as Bogue suggesting that there was some sensitivity about admitting you lived in the Bog! If this Bogg IS by any chance the one you seek, I would be most interested in hearing from you and I also have lots of information on it. 3. Hello Iain Thanks for your message. I checked the site Jim mentioned, but as you point out neither of the Boggs shown are near Canonbie, which my place definitely was as its on the Canonbie parish registers. A useful site from Jim though, and I have thanked him for pointing it out. Shame it wasn't your Bogg, as more information would have been most welcome. Thanks anyway! 3. Hi Annie I think your 'Bogg' is probably Bogrie. The meanings are the same (a Boggy place). Bogrie is a farm a few miles North of Tower of Sark on OS reference NY329759. Regards Ian. 3. Hi Ian Thanks for your message. I've checked out the place you've indicated, but I don't think it is the right one. My Bogg was definitely within the boundaries of the parish of Canonbie, which is a few miles south of Langholm on the A7, and that's a very long way from the Bogrie you mention. I do appreciate your suggestion though.
