Hello: I finally found my family on the 1901 census and it says he was born in what is very hard to read, but looks like Dummfresshen, Scotland. Does anyone have a clue where in Scotland this could be? He married Annie Hindmarsh 21 October 1878 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She was born in Alnwick, Northumberland County, England. His father was Samuel Cowan. His son was Samuel Cowan born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England in 1881. Has sisters Jane, Agnes, Annie and Mary. His sister Jane was born in Alnwick, Northumberland County, England and the rest of them are born in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Does this sound like your line, let me know. Thanks, Mae Rusk

Hello Reg Is this the family in 1881? You have same problem as myself and sure many others- they only put Scotland as place of birth! Not easy to find them is it!!
