    3. generally parish schoolmasters and their post Education Act equivalents didnt move around all that much. Some of them served the same school for decades. But that doesnt mean they didnt move around at all. the problem was with the rural kids, who moved around so much it made it very difficult for them to get a decent education. Mr Dickson's salary would be paid by the heritors and supplemented by fees paid by the scholars. There would be details in the town records if they have survived. And also perhaps mentions in the local paper. I know that there are school logs etc at Selkirk for the eastern part of the borders, and imagine there is something similar for the D/G area. 3. Hello, Further to some messages below, I am interested in information on a schoolmaster, James Jardine, who lived in Hightae between 1770 or so and (last known reference 1851). Presumably, he taught in Hightae as well. Questions arising from Ms. Olsen's email below: What are "heritors"? Is there heritors' records for Hightae or Lochmaben? Is there town records for Hightae (I think it was only a village)? If no town records for Hightae, would such information be in town records for Lochmaben? Is there town records for Lochmaben? Is there newspaper records dating this far back for Hightae or Lochmaben? Thanks all.
