My gt gt grandfather Thomas Toolan is shown as being born in Scotland in 1829 as is his wife Jane Bell of gavingill Kirbean Kirkcudbright. I haven't been able to get any further back but in my search I find that the Toolan name is more common in Ireland. Did many Irish people move into Scotland in the late 1700s/early 1800s? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can find Thomas and Jane's parents please? I am based in S. Wales.
