    3. Hi I wonder if anyone can help me out with a problem of Scottish geography? In the 1881 Census, consulted on 'scotlandspeople', my great-grandfather William McLellan's birthplace is given as 'Gallowayshire Marmley'. I'm having trouble locating this place-name, partly because I'm unsure as to the precise historical connotations of 'Gallowayshire', and partly because I suspect that the printed version 'Marmley' might be due to an error in transcription of the Census enumerator's original handwriting. I'd be most grateful for any suggestions as to the likely identity of 'Marmley'. (If it's of any relevance, much of his later life seems to be connected with North Ayrshire). Thanks. Le meas.
