    3. Hi John you really need an expert for this one but my view would be: I am not sure how late the coach services kept operating. But if you are talking about the late 1840s as opposed even to the early part of the decade, the railway network was pretty extensive. But I think it is still quite likely that they took a boat to Liverpool and then the train from there. So really, the dates are critical and so is the cost. You need to find out exactly what was available and who was travelling. The wealthy would presumably pick the most comfortable route - private carriage to nearest rail station, first class ticket. Those looking for work would rough it and do as much as they could on foot.
