    3. In answer to your enquiry - yes, Charles Sharpe does have a headstone in Cummertrees churchyard. It is unlikely to appear in the Memorials in Annandale registers however because it is not really pre-1855. But I know it well. It begins: "In memory of William son of Charles Sharpe in Kelhead who died 30th Sept 1852 aged 1 year. Also Isabella his daughter who died 19th Oct 1853 aged 2 months ..." [it continues through 13 lost children - yes I know, thirteen.] It ends: "Also William his son who died at Thebarton [should be Theberton] Street, Islington, London 8th March 1880 aged 19 years [death certificate says 7th, aged 18]. Also the above Charles Sharpe who died at Stenries 26 Feb 1895 aged 78 years. Also Isabella Sharpe his wife who died at Topmuir, Cummertrees 17th July 1921 aged 91 years." My interest in Charles Sharpe the elder, stems from his position as Limeworks manager at Kelhead and from his dear wife Isabella McKune, sister of my gggrandmother. I would be interested in continuing this, privately if necesssary, with anyone interested in the Sharpes of Closeburn or Kelhead Quarry. Keith Scott mariner98@supanet.com
