Hello to all, I am fairly new to this list after discovering some links to Dumfries. I'm not familiar with the Dumfries area as most of my research has been in Glasgow, Bute, or Perthshire. My ggg grandfather was William Howat(son). He was born abt 1821 in Dumfries to John Howat(son) and Agnes Grierson. He married Janet Menzies in 1846. Janet's parents were John Menzies and Margaret Baxter. William was a blacksmith, like his father John. William & Janet had 10 children, one of which was my gg grandmother Mary. I believe they were in Dumfries up until 1868 at least. By 1881 they were in Glasgow, and seemed to stay there until their deaths in 1892 and 1893. I don't know why they seem to have changed their name from Howatson (while in Dumfries) to Howat (once they arrived in Glasgow). Anyone have any ideas on this? I would like to find more information on William & Janet's parents, as all I have are their names & occupation. Can someone advise where I can find MI lists for the Dumfries area? Christine in Toronto
