    3. Hi Chris, If you go to our site http://freepages.genealogy/rootsweb.com/~maggiesirishkin/ and go to the Hewetson pages, you will see some variants of the Hewetson/Howatson name and much more. I will get back to you later if I can find more details on your family. I have Menzies in my family. My main branch were in Penpont, Dumfries. 3. My MENZIES are from Dumfriesshire as well - my gt gt grandfather John MENZIES first shows up in Newark Nottinghamshire England on the 1841 census. He is listed as a Draper and living with him is a younger brother, Robert, with no occupation. John is given as being 25 and Robert as 21 but this is the census with the rounding up/down instructions so I doubt if that is their real age! Shortly after they were joined by a third brother, Thomas. All three went into business, John became a Master Draper with a shop and several other properties in Newark, Robert and Thomas became Tea Dealers and then Grocers. All three married local girls, Robert marrying twice when he was left a widower with several small children. All three gave their father as Andrew MENZIES, Farmer. None stated him as deceased on their marriage entries. All three named their eldest son Andrew and their second daughter Agnes. I believe they were following a traditional naming pattern - especially as the second son and eldest daughter are always named for the parents of the wife. I have had the 1841 census for Dumfrieshire checked without success. My Mum did start to research this end of the family and obtained baptisms records for Robert and Thomas showing them to have been born in Durrisdeer and Enterkinfoot. Parents were shown as Andrew MENZIES and Agnes MINZIE. I have found an Andrew and Agnes MENZIES, brother and sister, living at Woodhouselee on the census records and - having obtained their death certificates find that they are shown as the children of Andrew and Agnes, so I believe them to be brother and sister to "my" Menzies brothers. I haven't been able to find a baptism for John, but have found a baptism for Agnes MINZIE whose father was John. There is also a William MENZIES in the census who could be another brother. William is often a second name to the sons of John,Robert and Thomas. A researcher checked the MI's for Durrisdeer and a fellow lister kindly checked the graveyard itself without finding any graves for the family. Although I have made contact with two distant cousins they have had less information than I did so I am still trying to prove that my line was living in Dumfriesshire. regards, Dorothy Dorothy Holden Dover Kent England Uk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
