Hi Valerie, I am very interested in your posting re James Cowan, really because of the place of birth Dunscore, Dumfries. My GGGGrandfather David Cowan was born in Dunscore and his father was James Cowan, of course this happened way back in 1801 however, its possible that this James Scott Cowan is a child of a brother of either James or David. If sks could look up the 1881 census for Cowans born in Dunscore, Dumfries, it may shed some light on the Cowans for me. Have to admit, I have not as yet delved into my Cowan side of the family as have my hands full trying to sort out my Kennedys. James Scott COWAN U 45 M Dunscore, Dumfries Rel. Prisoner Occ: Gen. Lab ... My gggrandfather's brother was James Scott Cowan, but they lived in Yarrow, Selkirkshire, and he worked in Ettrick. By 1881, my g-uncle James was in Ontario Canada. Since Dumfries is just over the border from Selkirkshire, I'm sure the Cowans there are connected somehow. It just struck me to have the Scott used as the middle name here -- middle names were not common in Scotland at this time. My own grandfather had no middle name, but both his father and grandfather bore the Scott to honor their mother/grandmother Jennie Scott of Harden, who died in Scotland before the Cowan emigration to Canada.
