Hello list members, I am writing this to let you know about the launch of the Dumfries 1841 Free Census project. This is part of the larger UK FreeCEN Project, which aims to enable researchers to view transcripts of UK Censuses between the years 1841 and 1891 freely online. Searches are possible across parish and county borders, speeding up the search for our ancestors. The FreeCEN project has been up and running for some time with data available online (see links below), but the Dumfries transcriptions are just starting and I am sending out an appeal for transcribers. All you need to take part is a computer with an image viewer and a spreadsheet program. We supply everything else, including a CD with the necessary images for the census area to be transcribed, instructions on data entry onto a spreadsheet, and plenty of advice and support. If you are reading this message on your computer, you have enough computer knowledge to take part! This project is a global on-line venture designed for ordinary family historians wherever they are, who would like to make a contribution to our great hobby.
