Alison in Calgary Hi! I'm descended from Lancelot Carlisle and Barbara Johnstone. For the history of the Johnstones - if you've not already done so - go to this website, which gives a comprehensive history of the early Johnstone, their kin and allies, written in the 19th centuries. It's a compelling read whatever your interest. www.electricscotland.com/history/dumfries/index Chapter 10 tells the story of Galabank, which Edward Johnstone of Mylnfield buys from his wife's grandfather. His wife was Gaylies [or Egidia?!] Rig, and the grandfather's name was John Galloway, who'd acquired it in 1610. This chapter says that Barbara Johnstone was the daughter of this Edward Johnstone, not of George. George marries Agnes Grahame in 1643 and dies in 1649, leaving two sons, John and Edward. Since Barbara marries Lancelot Carlisle in 1648, the inference is that George is her brother not her father. Read it and see what you think, then trawl through the previous chapters with a cold towel round your head as I did and trace back the Johnstones to the Laird John Johnstone who fought at Chevy Chase in 1387. > Peter Cox, I saw your e-mail regarding Lancelot Carlyle. My ggg grandfather was WILLIAM CARLYLE b. abt 1783, probably in Middlebie. I have not found any record of his birth. He was living in Middlebie in 1841 and 1851 per the census records. His tombstone in Ecclefechan churchyard states that he died 18 June 1857 so there should be a death cert. but none has been found at the SRO. I would be interested to know what history you have on the CARLYLES. Regards, Jim Mercer in Hamilton, Canada.
